Is it normal to find people's attitude to alcohol weird?

When I was young I used to go out drinking a lot like most people do, and it was good fun and I don't regret it. However as I get older I'm much less interested and almost never feel in the mood to drink alcohol to excess. 9 months of not drinking when I was pregnant made me realise that it's easy to have fun without alcohol.

My problem is other people seem to think it's imperative to a good time, and when you say you're not drinking they keep pushing it and try and force it on you, all under the guise of "it's just a joke, we just want you to have fun". The more drunk they get, the more they do this. I'm happy for other people to drink as much as they want but I don't want to join in and I don't want to always have to explain myself. Maybe I just don't feel like it.

Does anyone else see it this way? Is this normal?

            • Paracetamol - I know you've developed a bit of a "troll" reputation on here, but I always enjoy your contributions. You are refreshingly honest, offensive and hilarious all at once. It's great stuff, please don't stop

Yes my co-workers constantly ask me to go out with them when they go drinking.. by calling me a coward, square or nerd. I'm a teetotaler myself and just politely decline.

But it does get annoying when you hear it every single weekend for 5 years straight.

You don't try to convince someone to have a good time by insulting them. Being insulted, by my own definition, is not conducive to "a good time".

    • Yes! after so much time how can you not learn that maybe someone just doesn't want to drink much? I've even had someone slip booze into my soda before. And TBf she was really drunk and when people found out they were annoyed and thought it was wrong, but she still did it and no one watching stopped her. If she was a dude I would have rammed a bar stool into the crotch region.

People are pushy about drinking, because misery loves company.

Except I do drink, and smoke whenever I feel like it, but I don't try to peer pressure anyone into doing anything. No means no, my man.

Oh, no doubt, brother! I don't have a lot of tolerance for those teetotalers who make a big deal about how they don't drink, but for crying out loud, people who try to peer pressure a pregnant woman into having a drink must be miserable, pathetic alcoholics!

I was in a grocery store in Katy, Texas, and this dude asks me if I'd like to taste test some craft beers, so I said, "I'm a Texan, a Roman Catholic and a German-American, you know I love beer!" Probably my favorite beer is Shiner Bock though. I could never be an evangelist or a fundamentalist, because I love drinking, smoking and dancing! Those people are crazy lame, but I am glad my conservative relatives helped in my time of need last year.
