Is it normal to get headaches from a lack of caffeine?

Alright, so I’ve been drinking coffee on the daily for quite a while now (when I say quite a while, this is going on three years). It’s that get-up-and-go energy juice which’ll set me up for the day better than an average bowl of cornflakes. But if I stop drinking coffee for just a day, I find I am more easily irritable, I can’t concentrate on things, and on top of that I get this god damn piercing headache that’ll last the whole day. Basically, it makes me feel like washed up shit. I have to take at least one cup of black coffee in the morning to prevent this from happening. It’s like withdrawals from a class A drug or some shit, tell me if this is normal!!! 0.0

Yes, it's rather common to experience withdrawals from caffeine when quitting coffee.

It definitely does! I was wondering if it was an actual thing, caffeine withdrawal; but I’m not alone with this, so I guess it is!

Can’t take a break. It’s a bit like telling a drug addict to just quit taking heroin. It’s a bit of an addiction if I’m honest :/

It's normal. Drink the same quantity every day.

I drink instant and use a measuring spoon so I know exactly how much of the DRUG I'm using. An extra cup will mess me up the following day.

Ha I like how you describe it as a drug XP
I’m not as particular, but if you honestly want to know, I take three tea-spoons of the instant shit. I’ve taken more before, but it doesn’t have any pros/cons for me. As long as I have caffeine running in my system, I’m alright!

Caffeine withdrawal headache is common and easily cured by a cup of coffee. I once very slowly cut my 10 a day coffee habit down to one cup in the morning with no headaches, but when I gave that one up I had withdrawal headaches.

I went back to the one cup in the morning and usually another one with lunch: no withdrawal headaches

Yeah, now I must say it does go away after drinking a cup of coffee. I wouldn’t say I drink 10 cups a day, as I wouldn’t have the time, but I usually take three teespoons of dried coffee per cup (yes, I’m one of those odd balls XD) - a cup in the morning, and a cup in the afternoon. I could slowly cut this down to one cup, and that’s it. But then what? Do I have to keep drinking at least one cup of coffee in order to prevent this happening again? Is my life now in the grasp of...coffee?! O.O

You can keep cutting down on the amount of caffeine you drink by drinking something else. Like another comment said, black tea has about half as much caffeine as coffee. Green tea has a third as much caffeine (15 milligrams) as black tea. At that point, you'd probably be able to stop drinking caffeine without issue...or switch to decaf coffee, which has about a fifth as much caffeine as green tea.

Fun fact: caffeine can also cause headaches. If you do get to the point where you don't drink any, and then you drink some again, it might give you a headache.

Yeah, y’know that sounds like a good idea. But I’m not a big fan of tea 0.0
I’ve tried decaf coffee before, tricking my mind into thinking it has caffeine in it, but my conscious is too cunning for that. I still got withdrawal headaches from it. Thanks for the tips though!

Caffeine is an upper and you can get addicted to it. A lot of people that drink a lot of coffee on weekdays get headaches on the weekends from withdrawal. That's why the pain killer of choice on the weekends is Tylenol because it has caffeine in it.

Tylenol doesn't have caffeine in it. Caffeine can increase the effectiveness of Acetaminophen, but no Tylenol products contain caffeine.

On the official TYLENOL website under the FAQs section it says "No, TYLENOL products do not contain caffeine." Here is the web address: https://www.tylenol.com/safety-dosing/faq

Interesting. Tylenol is a trade name for acetaminophen, also known as your common paracetamol tablet - but the brand itself doesn’t contain caffeine. On the subject, I actually have a few ibuprofen tablets which contain a few milligrams of caffeine per dose, but I’m afraid of taking this in place of coffee as it will make you drowsy which neutralizes the effects of caffeine anyways...thanks for the tip!

Most likely those ibuprofen tablets don't have enough caffeine to actually make a difference in how awake you feel even if the ibuprofen didn't make you drowsy. To put it into perspective a cup of coffee has about 95 milligrams of caffeine in it. Black tea has 47 milligrams. If you want an alternative to coffee, tea would probably be the best option and as an added benefit tea is good for your health.

If you’re used to something and always have had it, it’s going to irritate you when it’s suddenly taken away from you, you’re normal, so don’t overthink it, friend! 💕

    • That’s a good point. I guess that could be applied to many things in life, not just consumables. Thank you for your views!
