Is it normal to get irked over incorrect geographical locations?
I get really annoyed if someone says "down" when the location is really "up" (North), or if they say "up there" if the location they are talking about is actually South of there.

But if we're going to be pedantic, "north" and "up" aren't really synonyms are they? Directions like "up" work in a completely different dimension to points on a compass like "north". Also, "up" is a relative term but "north" is a defined constant.
I am the same way. It is a pet peeve of mine. Most people don't know geograpy very well.
Ask any Australian what they think of your insistence that you are "up" and they are "down" and that anyone who implies that the concept of north being up was arbitrarily created by self-centred Europeans is wrong and must be corrected.
In an online group, some freaking Nigerian sent one of those ridiculous "I'm up here in London and don't have any money" messages. Because he said "up here" in London, everyone knew the message was fake because an American would have said "over here," or simply "in London." The idiot actually got huffy with us when we pointed out his obvious error!
You'd hate me I'm terrible at geography and I always hated that subject in school.
