Is it normal to hate it when someone tells you "you've grown" ?

Is it normal to HATE it when people who haven't seen you for a long time like a couple of years , suddenly tell you "You've grown" . All my adult life i've been told that i look years younger , that i could pass by as a school girl or a college girl and i take that as a compliment and not the "you've grown" as a compliment , and yesterday i was at the mall saw my friend's Aunt and she told me "You've grown" , and what did she mean by that , like i aged ? or matured ? .I am 29 by the way .

  • I think she meant that you've physically aged. Did you go to your high school reunion? It's weird seeing the aged faces of people you last saw as a teenager.

I know how you feel though. Last week, someone told me that I look "cute as a button". I am 37 years old (the pic in my profile was taken on my 37th birthday). People rarely believe me when I tell them my real age and I've even been accused of lying. It is flattering in some ways, but it's also frustrating because it's like I'm not getting any credit for the past ten years of my life.

I think you're way over-analyzing it, man. She's probably just recognized that you don't look like a kid anymore or dress like a kid anymore. Maybe you carry yourself in a more mature manner. Either way.

People normally do not believe that I am 20. They say it is because I don't carry myself like a 20 year old (they usually mistake me for mid-late twenties). I don't know what the fuck that means, but if someone was to insult you (wow, you look horrible for your age) I doubt that they would do it to your face.

    • I gained a lot of weight since the last time she saw me , alos i became a bit taller .I am not obese but i am curvy ,When she saw me i was wearing black pants that looked formal and the shape of my curvy hips and big thighs were shown underneath my pants) , and my hair was a bit messy and the acne and redness on my face was seen, i don't know if it's because of these things , like i wasn't wearing jeans and a colourful top and didn't do my hair in a tidy way and hadn't had makeup , or because i actually look older .

If you're really trippin' about this then maybe you could go ask her? Because honestly, you're saying that you look different. She was pointing out that you look different and she is recognizing that you gained weight or look more mature (having a more "curvy" figure would make one look more mature than to be a stick).

        • So you think if i lose weight and became less curvy people would STILL think that i am younger then my actual age , or there are other things that i should do to keep the youthful look ?

I think you would look more youthful if you got into shape, period. And if you're curvy, losing weight wont make you look less curvy. It will make you look like you're in better shape.

        • I also overheard my dad saying to his friend who works in the insurance and they were discussing insurance , that i'm grown now , (where people usually say that fathers most of the time see their daughters as little girls even when they are adults ). Does he mean that i matured or that because i'm 29 and 29 isn't young anymore or it has something to do with the insurance ?

29 is young but it's still adulthood. You're a grown adult now, meaning that, assuming you are not special needs you can reason for yourself, support yourself and make your own decisions and your parents no longer have to take charge of your life.

I hate that. I can't tell if they mean it as a compliment or something negative. Like are they talking about weight or looks? Am I not up to their standards?
