Is it normal to hate my dog?
Is it normal to hate my dog?
Ok, quick backstory: my girlfriend and I were hella blitzed one afternoon when her mother and grandmother who live with us were out shopping. We're making ourselves lunch in the kitchen when the door opens... and in comes running a little puffball. A dog. A dog that nobody told us we were getting, a dog that nobody asked for. Mom says it's so "Grandma has a friend" but I couldn't think of a worse dog to fill the role. From the day she came home I've been apprehensive. She had behavioral problems- not in a scared, I-don't-trust-you kind of way, but more in a stuck up, you-are-below-me kind of way. She flat-out REFUSED to be trained from just months old as well. We couldn't do the job ourselves because she saw us as her servants, and she flunked out of behavior school. It only gets worse.
We tried playing with her as a puppy but she somehow never grasped the idea of "fetch"? You'll throw the toy, she'll sit and stare at it.
She is very picky about dog food but she'll come running at the whisper of a possibility that you dropped a crumb of human food on the ground.
She harasses our cats and humps our tomcat, terrorizes our Persian, and though he tried to play with her, she had it out for our silver kitty until he tragically died yesterday from thyroid problems.
To add about our cat that just passed, he was the ONLY one of our animals that tried to be her friend. He was the only one who didn't run away and tried to have fun when she ran up to him. She seems now to not even notice he's gone. Our other cats cuddled together all night and were looking for him all day. Our stupid dog is completely unaffected.
Even MORE about how much she HATES our cats: when you try to pet one of them, she gets jealous and tries to get in their way, but when you subsequently try to give her attention, she growls and tries to bite you. She doesn't even WANT affection, she just doesn't want anyone else to have it either.
We had to get her special food that didn't have big chunks because she refuses to chew anything. She doesn't like treats until they're broken up into oblivion. Even small fruits that are dog-safe like blueberries, she wants cut into quarters. HAVE YOU EVER TRIED QUARTERING A BLUEBERRY?
She loves cat food and cat shit for dessert. We had to put up a baby gate to the cat's food and litterbox because she's so stupid she doesn't understand how to jump.
This dog HATES. WALKS. She REFUSES to get up when you put the leash on. She REFUSES to MOVE, even when she begs and cries to use the bathroom. You have to yank her to get her to move and then she starts crying. I don't know a single dog that HATES walks like she does.
Of course, none of this affects how ol' Gam-gam and MIL see her. They think she is the sweetest little angel to ever live. Grandma has dementia and tries to feed her EVERYTHING, even when we say "None for the doggie!".
I gave Grandma ONE cherry a few days ago since cherries are her favorite, and the first thing she tries to do is put it in the dog's mouth, pit, stem and all, right in front of me. Of course the fucking dog doesn't know any better but it's so irritating that we even have to deal with this! You don't give a mentally declining person a life to be responsible for! It's gotten to the point where she'll look all around for her lost little puppy that was biting her ankles the whole time. I think she's losing object permanence. Grandma used to just forget to walk her dog, but she also now actively refuses to take her dog out or play with her even though she is obsessed with that dog.
Between gritted teeth, I try to tell my girlfriend behind closed doors how much I hate that dog, but even she's gotten to the point where I'm not "allowed" to say it anymore. She thinks I'm going to abuse the shitstain or try to kill her.
Someone, PLEASE assure me that my feelings are normal. PLEASE let me know if there is something I can do.
TL;DR
Got a dog we didn't ask for and she turned out to be a rat disguising as a canine
