I hate when people think they have a right to come to america and can't speak our native language. Theyre everywhere nowdays. I got to the store and I cant understand a thing theyre trying to say and then they have the nerve to get fusterated with me when I dont understand them. What gets to me the most is when I call a buisness and they can't talk right. It leaves me wondering who the fuck would hire some dumbass immigrant who didnt even have the common coutersy to learn our language properlly. If youre going to come to American learn to speak our language or go home.

    Yes, imagine the nerve of those people, coming to the land of the FREE, and dare to choose what language to speak. Everyone should speak the same language as the people who first lived there.

    P.S. My knowledge about American history is pretty weak, remind me, the native Americans, what language did they speak?

          Sorry. I worded it poorly, and it was a silly comment anyway.

          A while back, someone posted a similar story, only throughout the story they had "SHUT UP" a couple of times, which is why I remember the post (I thought it was funny).

          So when you've responded with "shut up", I've just found it funny for that reason.

    i dont mind what language people speak here, since when i go to other countries i don't always know their language so why should i expect them to know mine when they come here? what i mind more about immigrants is when they come here illegally and then have like 20 kids and then go on welfare and never work a damn day in their life (nothing against people who come here to work)

Its English and spanish those are the largest spoken in America and it is not Called American , that is not an Real language I understand your piont but American ?     It's English, "American" isn't a language.
    And yes, it can be annoying when someone doesn't talk right or can't understand you, but becoming fluent in a second language can take years. So you kind of have to understand and be patient.

      Americans do not speak american they speak a diffrent form of English called American English thats why they have Brittish English , and American English on the options for most countrys . America did not pick an officiol language becuase we are sposeta be a melting pot but it should be English . The largest spoken is American and the second most spoken is Spanish .

    There are actually probably hundreds of Native American languages, the most commonly spoken of which is Navajo :) The language most US citizens speak was brought by settlers; it's not a "native language" at all.

      Dappled, sorry for my ignorance, but where did you read that america doesn't have an official language? I had never heard of that before reading this post. However, I remember reading in Mother Tongue by Bill Bryson that English was chosen by congress as the official language of the US way back at the start, although the voting was a close thing and German was very nearly the chosen language because of the amount of Germans already there and the idea of cocking a snoot at the old country.

        I thought it was common knowledge. I've certainly read it in enough different places to be pretty confident on it. Although I do remember reading there was a move recently to make English the official language and that it had fallen foul of people saying it'd be racist to do so, and that it would place less emphasis on bilinguality.

        I'll be honest, though, you've got me doubting myself now. Perhaps this is just a brainfart of mine and I've imagined it all. It happens. :)

    Hate is a strong word. Perhaps you should of used the word "annoyed"? They annoy me as well. I've been to retail stores where none of the employees spoke a word of English. They have the nerve to speak spanish to me assuming I know the language, then give me an attitude when we can't effectively communicate where an item is located. Then the managers come and they can't speak it either. If I call an insurance company, an income tax center, or even the DMV on the phone, the voice machine that answers it is in Spanish. Most of the jobs where I live now require someone who speaks Spanish. A more qualified person who can't speak Spanish will get turned down while a person who is less qualified, and can't speak a word of English gets hired. I'm going to have to take Spanish speaking classes in college if I want to have a chance. I'm not racist, just frustrated.

    I don't like it when americas say this. there are a lot of american tourists in my town and when i'm out with my friends and some tourist askes where some old building is but my friends don't(rather understandebly) know how to tell them or dont under stand and the strenger gets pissed of. It's so frustratine! so ( I'm the only one who can speak fluent english) if there nice about it or try to speak italian then i help the out. if there mean some times I tell them the long way round or once I tryed to speak in the most high stangard and complicated vocabulary I could manage hahaha the look on there face was priceless
