Is it normal to hate rhyming and rhythmic poetry/songs?

How many people here hate rhyming? Any rhyming, whether it be in a song, in poetry or just someone rhyming in speech to sound clever. When the words rhyme and especially when they rhyme to a rhythm (like in music or poetry) it's extremely annoying, I can't stand it. There's something about it that I find extremely unpleasant and I can't put my finger on it. It makes me feel angry and annoyed. Doesn't matter what the subject is about.

I prefer when words flow but not in a rhythm and when there's no attempt made to rhyme, but occasional accidental rhyming is ok.

I tend to spew out ridiculous rhymes. I'm just corny like that.

Yeah, i hate it. Unless it's lyrics in a song, that's different. Just sucks for all the school kids who are forced to write poetry like that. Iambic pentameter is the worst! (That's all Shakespeare)

Met a retarded kid named Greg with a wooden leg
Snatched it off And beat him over the head with the peg
Go to bed with a keg wake up with a forty
Mixed it with alka seltzer and formula 44d

Seems weird to me. I think there is an appealing musicality about rhyming. I don't think rhyming is necessary when it comes to lyrics, but it definitely lends structure.

Basic, childish rhymes piss me off in the context of songs written by adults supposedly for adults. I'd rather no rhyme at all. Here are some examples I got from an NME article:

    Des'ree - Life:
“I don't want to see a ghost / It's the sight that I fear most / I'd rather have a piece of toast."

Snap - Rhythm Is A Dancer:
"I'm as serious as cancer when I say rhythm is a dancer"

Duran Duran - Is There Something I Should Know?
"And fiery demons all dance when you walk through that door
Don't say you're easy on me you're about as easy as a nuclear war"

Some more bad lyrics, not all of which rhyme:

      Shakira - Whenever, Wherever:
      "Lucky that my breasts
      Are small and humble
      So you don't confuse
      Them with mountains"

      R.E.M. - Leaving New York:
      "Leaving was never my proud"

America - Horse With No Name:
      "There were plants
      And birds
      And rocks
      And things"

Vanilla Ice - Play That Funky Music:
      "Now you're amazed
      By the VIP posse
      Steppin' so hard
      Like a German Nazi"

Shania Twain - Honey I'm Home:
      "My panty line shows
Got a run in my hose
      My hair went flat
      Man, I hate that,
Just when I thought things couldn't get worse,
I realized I forgot my purse.
With all this stress I must confess,
this could be worse than PMS.""

Paul McCartney & Wings - Live and Let Die:
      "But if this ever-changing
world in which we live in ..."

Madonna - I Love New York:
      "I don't like cities
      But I like New York
      Other places
Make me feel like a dork"

Young MC - Bust A Move:
      "Your best friend Harry
      Has a brother Larry
      In five days from now
      He's gonna marry
He's hopin' you can make it
      There if you can
      'Cause in the ceremony
      You'll be the best man"

      Cheap Tricks - Ghost Town
      "And there's music playing
      But I can't hear a sound
Just the sound of the rain
      Falling silently down"

        I'm on a roll, like an egg...roll...

        Miley Cyrus - Who Said:
        "No limitations on imagination
        Imaginate!
        Yea!"

        Rebecca Black - Friday:
        "Yesterday was Thursday
        Today is Friday
        We so excited
We gonna have a ball today
        Tomorrow is Saturday
        And Sunday comes afterwards”

U2 - Some Days Are Better Than Others:
        “Some days are dry
        some days are leaky
        Some days come clean
        other days are sneaky
        Some days are slippy
        other days sloppy
Some days you can't stand the sight of a puppy"

        Hilary Duff - So Yesterday
        “If the light is off,
        Then it isn't on''

  • Hmmm, while I don't "hate" it, it's certainly not my favourite type. But, I'm not particularly knowledgeable about poetry in the first place. I voted you 'normal'. :)

You should check out the poet Steven Jesse Bernstein. Influenced many grunge bands of the Seattle scene of the late 80s/early 90's. Couldn't rhyme to save his life.
