Is it normal to have a fear of blades (slicing or cutting objects)?

I know that Aichmophobia is often cited for people having a fear of needles and other such piercing objects, but what about being specifically afraid of cutting, slicing, slashing things like kitchen knives and swords? It's been a bit of a problem for me ever since nicking my finger with a box cutter.

I used to assume it was a normal fear to have, but whenever I bring up my "fear of knives and stuff", those around me just laugh it off like it's a joke to be afraid of something so obvious. Thoughts?

You need to cut through the confusion and stab at the heart of this phobia! No matter how you slice it, a phobia of knives is a dicey thing.

Jokes aside, buttering your toast with a teaspoon and tearing into your steak with your bare hands are not "socially acceptable". While it is sensible to regard knives etc as tools with the potential to be dangerous, being actually fearful of them will no doubt be problematic. If you can't overcome this irrational fear yourself, you should get help. Remember, the longer you leave it untreated, the more difficult it will be to rid yourself of this demon.

I only said I was afraid of them, not how afraid I was. There's a lot of room between "can't go near them" and "tenses up a little when they're pointed at you". :)

Sorry, the implication was something more than a normal and rational "tenses up a little when they're pointed at you".

        Ignore what I said.

No worries, I've never been good at implications. The puns were worth the misunderstanding. :)

How strong is this fear? If its effecting your life then it sounds irrational and you might want to get help.

Yes, well, that could work as a blanket statement for every phobia. I was more just looking for whether this was often singled out as such. It's not too terribly severe in my case.

It goes both ways. Some ppl are scared of them some play with like toys. Most just think of them as tools.
