Is it normal to have a fear of sharks

I am terrified of sharks and when I was back floating once I drifted off and I started to imagine a huge shark coming for me from below.... Shudder!

Is this normal?

Put it this way: More people die by toasters than sharks every year. Feel better now? I've probably just made you scared of toast...

I was wary of sharks until I saw basking sharks. They're the only shark native to the seas and oceans surrounding my island but they're also the second biggest fish to be found anywhere in the world (35 - 40 feet for very big ones). They're also entirely harmless and you could happily swim with one. They're safer even than, say, dolphins (which have an undeserved good reputation while many sharks have an undeserved bad one). I think it's because dolphins look happy and sharks look mean.

I can see why anyone would be frightened of, say, bull sharks, though. They're only little fellas but I wouldn't want to be around one. Even with them, though, attacks are rare.
