Is it normal to have chickens for a pet?

I have 12 chickens which I cherish. They are the best pet I ever had. Not only do they act funny and do tricks, they give me eggs every day. The problem is everyone around me thinks I am nuts. They think chickens are disgusting and dirty. My coop is like a shed and their pen is 30' x 30'. I clean it every 2 weeks. It is very clean as far as chickens go. Am I weird for liking chickens? I have had cats and dogs, but chickens are the best.

Chickens make great pets and it is nice to always have fresh eggs! When I was little I used to like to hypnotize them so I could easily paint their nails :-/

My best female friend has family that have chickens as pets. They have a horse, many sheep, many chickens, and a dog. They all have names. None of them are ever going to get eaten, so they're pets. If the chickens didn't lay, they'd still remain and still be fed because they are loved.

When i was little my dad bought my sister and i baby chicks. She kept 4 yellow ones and i ended up with 1 that had spots...mine was a survivor lol but before he could get any bigger my dad gave em away :/ chickens are adorable! Its not really strange that you have em as pets. If i could i'd want a piggy ^@^

Of course, any tame animals can be pets. My friend has pet ducks, and my mom knows these people who come into the store where she works, and they have a pet squirrel! You're normal in my opinion. :)

  • Duh! Of course it's normal! What do you think farmer's chickens are called? PETS! :) Even if it's for food, it's still called a pet!

No, they aren't "pets," they are commodities that are sold for use and profit. Do you do this to YOUR "pet"? No? Of course not. Whenever I hear people claim they "love the like pets" and they are raising the animals to consume or sell, they are lying to you to assuage their own consciences because they know those animals are anything but pets.

      • No, I mean the ones who lay eggs. You can have them as a pet even if they lay eggs. =P My family used to be farmers and we had pet chickens, but as a bonus they layed eggs.

Chickens are amazing pets! As u say they are funny, and whatever ppl say they have their own personalities. It is definately unusual (not quite as unusual as quails - I have about 30!) but who says unusual isnt great?

  • It's a little odd but I used to know someone who had a pet anaconda so it can't be too far outside the realm of normalcy.

You're NORMAL!! Many people have figured out that chickens, ducks and geese are fabulous companion animals. There's a little white duck living here with me, she's a great companion. Smart, plucky, lovable. Enjoy the birds!

A neighbor of mine had some roosters. I didn't know for a while and every morning I would hear this noise. I'm like, why do I hear cock-a-doodle-doo ?? Then I saw it in their front yard one day. It was a rad rooster.

I did not know that. I just thought the hens clucked. But when I finally saw the animal, I knew it was a rooster. I love roosters! But thanks, now I know :)

      • I had pet chickens for almost twenty years, none of them cock-a-doodle-doo except the roosters. The hens just make puck-wok and cooing noises.

Well it's a fact, hens do that. I'm not going to argue with you, justy google it if you don't believe me. I've had chickens for a long time as well.

          • I wasn't arguing, just relating my own experience. Gosh, I didn't expect you to take it the wrong way--it's just chickens, silly.

Having chickens as pets is very practical in my opinion. You could save a lot of money on eggs. Mmm, omelets... *drool*
