I have many circular itchy patches and spots all over my scalp and have tried many over the counter remedies without any positive results.

To answer your question the best I can, I have had a problem with a dry, itchy scalp and it turned out to be my shampoo. My mother has this problem but she has health issues that causes dry, itchy sky.
Could be headlice, reaction to shampoo or conditioner. You need to get someone professional to take a look: a doctor or pharmacist or even a friend.
It could also be from washing your hair too often and drying out your scalp.

The only way to treat it is every 2 or 3 days you have to get your head under a sink and scratch all the sludge off. I get it too. It itches and burns. I scrape it all off everywhere on my scalp and part my hair different ways to let the water drain it out. Your hair will look nicer too if you do this. Its weird.
Brush ya hair hard with a really stiff brush. Probably pimple type things
