Is it normal to have low self-esteem because of grades?

I have a 3.27 GPA, might get up to 3.4 by the end of the semester, but I constantly beat myself (mentally of course) for not being as good as my 3.7+ friends. Is this normal?

You are too hard on yourself. Go do drugs or get laid or something. Enjoy being young. None of that shit matters once you get old. And don't give me that I am trying to get into a good college shit. All you need to get into college these days is a number 2 pencil and an IQ somewhere above room temperature.

  • I understand a bit how you feel... A high GPA is important to me too because I'd like to have the opportunity to get into grad school in a couple of years and competition is fierce. I had a really tough class last semester and almost failed an exam I thought I was going ace - I had studied a lot for it. I felt as though I was going to puke after the exam was over. Not achieving the grades you expected or hoped for can completely undermine your confidence in your abilities.

My only suggestion would be to learn better study habits so that you can increase your marks. I hope you achieve your goals. :)

Oh, and that tough class I had where I almost failed one of four exams... I aced the other three, so I ended up with a high grade in the end, but I had to work my ass off to get it.

Completely normal. It's too easy to regard grades as an indicator of your worth as a human being but everyone should realize that there are often things holding them back from fulfilling their potential. You have to identify the underlying issues limiting your success.

I've been having that problem throughout high school as well. I go to an extremely competitive high school where people are way too concerned with having a perfect 4.0 and be in all the honors classes. I got into some pretty good colleges with a 3.2 GPA. There are other things that people look at other than grades.

You are very hard on yourself. I just graduated college with a 3.75. Even though I worked several jobs through college, my friends with 3.2s are easily getting jobs right after graduation. I guess they had more marketable majors, but still... I really don't think this matters as much as you're making it out to be. I can tell you that when I am interviewed, they will look at my resume and automatically think that I am rigid, inflexible, unwilling to be social, and possess no common sense. It's rather frustrating. But it's not the end of the world. I think that if you do as much as you can with what you've got, things will work out in some way.

As an IIN physicist, I'd say it's normal. Come to think of it - everybody hates school but eventually you're gonna realize how important to revise on everything you've missed.

Your GPA isn't that bad. Mine is a 3.5 and it might actually decrease at the end of the semester. I plan to continue on the Grad. school, but I too am worried that my GPA won't withstand the competition. I would just suggest studying smart, meeting with professors, getting involved in study groups, relaxing, and getting plenty of sleep and water. Working out regularly also helps, be sure to draw up a schedule for yourself, I'm sure you'll be fine.

I sucked in school. I was told I had a learning issue, which I don't believe but it made me feel stupid. Eventually, after receiving no extra help, I just have up and didnt care about my grades. If I had your gpa I would have felt pretty good.

  • I don't think its normal. People put way too much concern into their GPA. My GPA was about 1.5. Fuck school. The education system here is bullshit. Even if I did good it wouldn't have done me any good in life. I have an extremely negative opinion of school though because of bad experiences. I have learned much more on the internet than I ever did in school and they expect everyone to learn things the same way. I hope my old school burns to the ground (not with anyone in it though).

You probably had jobs before hand that gave experience in the two jobs you have now and they thought as most do that experience in most eyes beats education. Sure enough it does in the real world for those college grads going into work in a heavy populated career path. Trust me I know.
