Is it normal to have no idea what to do with my life

I genuinely dont know what to do. All of my friends all know what to do and where they are going, leaving school. But i dont. when ever i think about it i feel like crying. i always thought it would come to me. but it hasnt. when ever people ask me "what are you going to be?" (which is happening more and more) i feel so useless and mad at my self because i can only reply "im not sure".

I'm 20 years older than Kingsley and I have no clue either. Seems most people wake up with a plan or goal of some kind. The rest of us wake up and wonder "What now?" I long ago accepted it's the way I am and think there are advantages and disadvantages for both types.

I think that you sound like a complete idiot. If you aren't smoking weed every day, I don't know what you are doing with your life.

Perhaps, you should consider a career in one of the many fields of study pertaining to a sustainable Planet Earth.

I actually think my life sucks right now. Really, its very depressing. I was in college, but kept bouncing from major to major, and stopped going in order to really think things through, and come to a decision. I didn't want to waste money pursuing something I wasn't sure about. Now, semesters have passed, and I'm still stuck in the same place in my life trying to figure things out.

I work in a hospital, so have played with the thought of maybe becoming some kind of tech, or take one of those certified courses that only take like 8 months. But I don't want to take the easy way out and do something just for the heck of doing it, or doing something that makes little to no pay, because in the area I live in; I need something with a salary big enough for me to actually be able to stay there, even though in another 2 years I'm thinking of moving out of state. I still want to be secure though.

In the beginning I wanted to pursue journalism, or do something with music. Then I was playing with the thought of a psychologist, then I thought of a paralegal..., so yeah, I don't know what I want to do right now. I'm confused. Really confused.

Please do not use the Archaic euphemized form referring to a fictitious nether world.

Please do not use -ists or -isms.

      Thank you.

Haha, please. Last week I wanted to choose Logistics as an MOS now I'm dying to go into linguistics. I changed my major from Criminal Justice to Business Management two semesters ago, now I want to study Biology. Having a plan doesn't mean you know for sure what you want to do. I just do what works for me at the time.

Some people spend their entire lives trying to figure that out.

What excites you more than anything else? It may be something that other people wouldn't consider exciting at all.

If you can give an honest answer to that question, then you will have answered yours.

    :-)

Yes, it is normal. I am graduating with my Bachelor's this May. I applied to law school (at the last minute; call it a lack of confidence, or ambivalence with a desire for more options), and I am waiting to see what comes of that. :)

    Perfectly normal mate.

Yes, it can be frustrating but it's also liberating in it's own way - just drifting along.

Also; imagine if you had a strong passion to be a pilot for example & something happened to prevent you from doing it. THAT would be horrible! Those of us with no direction are shielded from that at least.

Isn't the real question...."What would I need to do to get inspired?..."

Engage in different experiences in order to form a preference.

I haven't known what I want to do with my life for years. Taken a few courses in college. Finished one, dropped out of the other two. Now I'm just trying to find work until I (hopefully) get a better idea what to go to school for. Getting work is also proving to be difficult.

Back up plans are good too. Its nice to have something under your belt in case something else doesn't work. I did cosmetology, because I knew that people would always need their hair cut.

Look into the careers, where you know you'll always be needed. Nurses are good too, because you know there will always be sick people. Good luck! Haha! Actually, good luck to all of us! Lol :)

    Yes, it's incredibly normal.

Having so many different potential avenues means it's a scary prospect to pick just one, or to predict which one might lead to the greatest success. If there's nothing pushing you in any particular direction, it's very easy to be stuck in the middle, doing nothing but treading water.

do not worry, many of lifes more interesting and adventurous people would say the same and felt exactly how you do, but it is good you fret so, it proves you have drive and want a industrious and fruitful life, i was like you, i wasn't sure what to study at 16/17 then got into a career of sorts, not great money at all, but an experience and i met a lot of people, did 7 years in total had a complete change, customer relations and i grew as a person then joined the reserves traveled a lot worked abroad and i'm now again in your situation, though i have made some opportunities and trades available to me, and already i can pay off my house and then plan or not my future from there, good luck honey

I'm 21 and I have no idea either, and can't stick to anything long enough to find a speciality, but on the other hand, I love my life and would hate to be tied down to taking it too seriously! Theres still time for it to come to you!

I know, I feel your pain. I found something like a little quote yesterday which sums it all up.

'There are 7 billion people on this planet who I have not met, and 195 countries I have not visited. Yet I am stuck in this insignificant town, being pressured into making decisions about my future, when I barely even know who I am'

I remember reading some blog about life professions. This guy was giving advice, and at one point said how you truly know what you love, and want to do is as simple as one thing. Think about the one passion you have that's so strong, it makes you tear up.

Mine was helping those who were raised in a disadvantaged economy, and wanted to do something with their lives. :) http://welivesimply.info/living/finding-your-passion-groove/
