Is it normal to have no pets in the family as a child?

When I was younger, during my childhood, my family didn't keep any pets. Well we did have a few goldfish now and then, but fish are hardly 'real' pets that you can interact with are they?

Just curious to see how many others didn't have cats/dogs/whatever as pets growing up.

We've always had cats and dogs, but did you know that there are fish capable of being as much a part of the family as a pet cat? or maybe at least a lizard or a mouse? I've got axolotl's and they are my babies :)
