Is it normal to have the urge to laugh in traumatic situations.

Whenever something really bad happens like when my little sisters' dog got run over, or when one of them almost got snatched, or when one of them had a really bad asthma attack ect...I always feel this urge to laugh. I feel this huge grin spread across my face and a chuckle form in the back of my thoat and I have to leave the room to keep from laghing in front of them and getting into trouble. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it normal?

People need to find a way to release tension, and for some the quickest way to do this is through laughing, so yeah I think its normal.

  • Earlier I was in gym playing volleyball, and one of my friends got hit in the side of the head with a stray ball... and I couldn't stop laughing. I laughed so hard, I almost got an asthma attack, which made me laugh harder.

Don't know if it's normal or not, but you're not alone >.>

It's normal. As ItDuz said, it just one way of coping with the situation.

I myself just stay quiet even when something bad and traumatic happens. Others might think I'm cold and don't care, but that's just my way to handle feelings. For example, I have never cried in funerals, but that doesn't mean that I don't care.

I am like this too especially in situations where the person gets hurt (like falling down the stairs). It just makes me want to laugh and laugh till im crying, I dont think I would be able to stop if I started. It is so hard to hold the urge to laugh inside yourself. So I believe it is normal to feel this way. I mean it happens to the best of us, right.

You laugh at bad things because: the left side of your brain is in charge or controls your sadness or anger and the right controls happiness. When the lefi side of your brain feels serious pain or hears something traumatizing, the left side of our brains produce happy hormones to override the sadness, as sadness is not good for us. The hormones are produced at an exedingly fast rate which means that we laugh or smile at the bad news.

This is the reason why you all laugh at bad things.

Normal, my friend laughed when her neighbour came round to her house to say their cat had been run over, luckily it was subtle and the neighbour didn't notice.
I've had the urge to do this too, it's my first reaction anything. I even make jokes about bad things that have happened, it's not because I'm mean, it's just my way of dealing with it.
I find little kids falling over absolutely hilarious.

Normal, One day me and my friends went to my other friends house and he said his dog had died (They'd had him for 12 years) and said he'd be out in a minute, so me and my friends sat down to wait.

The we heard them burying the dog in the back garden and i Immediately felt a grin coming, my friends didnt notice at first. Until i burst into laughter and they were so shocked. As was i.

Yes, unfortunately, I believe it's normal. I have this problem quite often, but I know there are many more people who do the same thing. My friend once started laughing so hard when I told her my uncle had a heart attack. Another time, I passed out and when one of my other friends heard about it, she couldn't help but laugh. She told me this herself, but she was quite shocked and worried. But I feel like such a horrible person when I end up doing this to someone else. If someone does it to me, I don't quite mind it so much because I understand that it happens, as I've experienced it before.
