Is it normal to hear my walls tick?

Ever since I can remember I've heard my walls tick, almost like a clock. Sometimes it speeds up, sometimes it slows down, get louder & quieter &, sometimes I go months w/o hearing it. I've lived in several different places & heard it in almost all of them. My mom & brother have heard it, back in the house we grew up in but not since then. I quit asking other people if they could hear it too, no one could...Until this past year. My boyfriend & I were sitting quietly (I had been listening to the ticking off & on all evening) when it started to get louder. I just watched his face for any change in expression (like I always do when I can hear it & someone else is with me). When he started looking around I kept quiet & didn't say a word, after about 30 seconds he looks at me & says "Where is that clock at?!" One other person has heard it & it went almost the same way.
So what do you all think? I know I'm far from normal lol but I can't be the only person this happens to...Right?

If its the beetle, its normal. If its not, then I've never heard of such a thing.

Yeah I hear it in my bedroom wall. Moved to old house 7 mnths ago heard shortly after and kn numerous ocassions dince hhen. Def not pipes. Possibly insects but sounds just like a clock tick tick tick . . . no tock. Volume up snd down and stops for no apparent reason. Mirro fell off wall shortly after we moved in and strange banging noises around 3-5am latched bathroom door released (twice) outside light (inside switch) turned on at 5am one morning - no sensor. A little spooky anx i wonder if ticking is another example of weirdness but people tell me i'm silly. Hmmm

That's a little creepy. You might want to hire an exterminator. It could be a bug infestation.

You have a case of the Ticking Poltergeist. You'll need to get in contact with Ghostbusters.

I have this too and have had it in my room for a few years now. It's so weird! I thought it was my watch or clock but no. I thought I was going mad. I can only hear it when it's really quite in my room. It's louder in some places and quieter in others. Sometimes it stops then keeps going... so weird. I remember getting so fed up one time with it that I thought I was going mad!

Yeah I hear this too. It's pipes and floorboards expanding and contracting under different temperatures

It's either pipes expanding and contracting with heat and cooler water. Or it could be the siding on your house expanding and contracting from heat and cooler temps too. That's what my house does. Completely normal.

It's not the pipes either, I know what that sounds like. This has been going in for more than 20 years, & I've moved several times. It just follows me...

    silent hill enveloping your world?

It is the pipes in your wall. You probably hear the noise more in the winter. It is the pipes expanding when the hot water is going through them. This could be due to someone taking a shower or if your place is heated by hot water then it makes that sound too.

Nope I really don't think it's the beetle.

  • I read there's a kind of insect that can do that, but this doesn't really sound like that.

    • I found it, it's called a death watch beetle. If the ticking for a few minutes when you make loud noises, it's probably these guys.
