Is it normal to learn something for the mere sake of it?

As a wannabe polymath, I enjoy learning things for the mere sake of doing so. Frequently, I am bothered by people who ask what the point of learning is if it doesn't yield money or enhanced reproductive opportunities. My answer to this is always, "Why do you watch TV and eat unnecessarily, thus making you fat and draining your wallet?" The response is always, "Well, if you're going to learn something, you may as well be paid for it." Is enjoyment not payment enough? I am given the impression that learning for its own sake is a bit abnormal (or at least it is in the south). Does anyone else enjoy learning as a hobby?

I'm a compulsive learner. I've been reading voraciously since I was four years old and watch the Discovery Channel like it's going out of style - Oh, wait, it is! I feel your pain there.
I have amassed a huge body of knowledge this way, as I am sure you have, and what I always tell people is this: "No information is useless. It's just out of context."
Like the time my little cousin got locked in the car in the hundred-degree heat and none of us could get the door open and because it's Wyoming the car people were going to take like an hour to get there. I borrowed my aunt's engagement ring, picked up a rock, and used them like a chisel and hammer to smash the window. Problem solved! Everyone was all impressed and I was like, "Yeah, diamond's the hardest substance in the known universe. All that learning's not so useless now, is it?" (I did ding the ring pretty bad, but my aunt was just glad her toddler didn't die of heatstroke.)
Haters are going to hate. In the words of the esteemed Bob Marley, "Don't worry, be happy."

I like to go to different churches and learn who the cocksuckers are, men who praise the lord then quietly suck cocks on the side. I love getting blown by clergymen!

Its nice to keep the brain active It helps if you are interested in the subject though......
I am not a professional photographer but still enjoy taking photos, I'm not a professional chef but love cooking Its all similar I think.........You haven't got a physical result; but you've satisfied your urge to feed your brain......Some people just love learning I didn't do well at school and want to make up for it now.

Forget about what people say Do what you want!! Its productive healthy and its not harming anyone.
Plus its your time and money to do with what you wish!

  • Yes I enjoy learning as a hobby. People who don't are just lazy I think.

Yes, I love to learn, but it does depend on WHAT I'm learning.

Also, I really hate when people put watching TV and laziness together, as if it's the same thing. Plus, you can actually learn quite a lot watching TV.
