Is it normal to leave out the best player in the countries history

The USA already have a group of "death" in the toughest group in the World cup. But The 23 Man roster for the USA was released today and it had one name notably missing.

Landon Donovan - the United States leading goal scorer. Admittedly he has lost a step since his hiatus from the National team, it save to say he is still better then 6 or 7 other players that did make the team. Including an unproven 18 year old Julian Green, that has one Game with the team.

The German Born Manager Jurgen Klinsmann has made huge progress with building the team up since he takeover of the team. But is this a case of what is the best for the team, to leave off a proven leader and experiencened player. Or should it be in Jurgen we trust?

What are your thoughts, either from an objective point of view, or as a football fan from any country. How would you feel if you "statistically" best player of your country's history, off the roster?

    The only thing I can think of is that Jergen is going for the group of guys that have the best team chemistry. Maybe Landon was acting like a prima-dona in the locker room and throwing off the team unity. Maybe...

      i have mixed feeling one this, i dont think he was acting poorly, since his return he done everything right, but either just not enough, or maybe Jergen isnt a fan of Donovan. It just seem shocking some of the roster are decent players, but well below Donovan level to preform and impact a game i feel

      and well at least Udi likes mt story even if no one else seem interested lol

        I'm a huge USMNT fan actually. For some reason I still have faith that Jergen knows what he's doing, at least long term. Perhaps he's just accepting the fact that we're going to get knocked out of this group of death no matter what, so better to get more young guys some experience...

          that was my thought, well time will tell if the hype for Green is deserved or more like Freddy Adu's and not live up to his "potential".

          If we can just somehow manage to draw German somehow i'll have hope
