Is it normal to lie a lot

I have a habit of lying and manipulating others a lot. I've gotten pretty good at it, like a talented actor, saying just enough to give an impression of something I want at that moment but not enough to not be able to change the "truths" later. I usually do it because it will give me an immediate gain (recognition, friendship, admiration, love, money,...) but regret it later since then I have to find new acquaintances as soon as they find out about my lies and reject me.
Is this normal?

I didn't know what to click about it being normal or not, I think a lot of people do but at the same time others would find that completely silly and confusing.

Personally, I do. I don't know why I lie so much over nonsense pretty things that the truth would not hurt, and I often get so frustrated at myself for it, but I do all the time.

I've been dishonest so much times in my life. It got me into being into something I'm not, and people loved me for who I was not.

    Don't lie.

If you can't stop lying see a mental health professional. Also I would highly recommend the Twelve Step program of Codependents Anonymous. If you're lying to manipulate and get what you want or to avoid possible rejection it's not healthy and in my humble opinion the cost of this behavior is your authentic self; your identity. It will greatly behoove you to accept that you're powerless over other people's thoughts, feelings and opinions of you.

    • I could probably learn quite a bit from them but they don't have it where I live also I don't like cult like places. I think I'm just being immature with the lies

  • You're obviously not that good at it or people wouldn't find out you are lying. Everyone lies sometimes. It sounds like you are overdoing it though which can become a problem for you as well if you burn all your bridges. At least it sounds like you are doing it with a purpose intended. I have known pathological liars who do it for no reason all the time and everyone knows they're full of shit.

    • I know, but it's almost become automatic. :/ I see something that I want and the easiest and quickest way to get it is by lying. It's like that inhibition level has disappeared and I forget about the future in that moment.
I think it all started when I consistently kept getting rejected for being myself (at home, later in school). So I started slipping into new identities to give people someone they would like and in return gain love. Then it became normal and spread to other areas

      • You should just be yourself. If people don't like it, fuck em.
