Is it normal to like dry places?

It seems like most people have a very strong attraction to lush, green places. The greener, the better. When most people go on hikes, they want to hike through deep forests with lots of ferns and other greenery. On the other hand, most people consider deserts and semi-desert areas to be ugly and God-forsaken. Yet, I find myself strangely attracted to drier places, especially California's Eastern Sierra region. It's hard to explain. But to me, the high desert and drier mountain ranges just have an appeal that lush, coastal forests don't have. Yet, when I show people pictures I take, I often get a comment about being in the 'end of the world'. Or I'm asked what I find appealing about these places. Is it abnormal to be more attracted to dry places like this than to lush, green places.

My older sister loves the hot, dry conditions. Even in her old apartment, she'd crank up the heat and get that place into the 90s, with space heaters, too, so it would be desert-like. Wore as little as possible, too..At times, fully naked. We flew out to Arizona to visit family once, and, found a remote, dry, hot as hell area, and she just laid out in the sand, topless, soaking in the baking, dry heat.

I the humidity I feel terrible whenever its humid. Im not saying I love the desert but most of California is my ideal climate--semi-arid? My sister in law moved from Pennsylvania to New Mexico and loves it, its never humid and even when its hot its Ok in the shade. Here it feels like a sauna most of the summer. Don't even talk about Florida (which I swear is Latin for 'bug-infested living hell)...

That's neat. I prefer mild wet places. The climate of the Faroe Islands would be perfect for me.

You are not alone. Arid and high desert areas hold a fascination for many people. Many have explored deserts just as others have explored the forests, mountains and seas of the world historically.
Interestingly, before GPS, navigating in a desert was done in exactly the same way as it was at sea. The sands of a desert are look the same as static ocean waves, too.
