Is it normal to loose your vision in the water?

This doesn't bother me as such...more of an observation

But as a kid I did a lot of swimming and I remember being able to see in the water (though my eyes always used to turn red). Then one day I went under the water and my vision became blurry in both eyes and from then on I had to wear goggles all the time...anyone else had this problem/or know what caused it to happen?

(Eye sight out the water is not 100% perfect but classed as average and I'm able to see things clearly, have check ups now and then - no problems...prefer to swim with my head down rather then up to avoid strain on my neck)

Thank Yous :)

I wear goggles instead of eyeglasses. I also am part of the moon patrol.

I can see pretty clearly underwater, although I have realised that in some pools it's easier to see than in others.
Some people don't feel like they don't need them, but goggles are always a good idea, considering the amount of chemicals they put in swimming pools nowadays.

maybe over the years the quality of the water has changed.

    this is interesting.

i think they put a lot more chemicals in swimming water nowadays.

    goggles are good.

This used to happen to me when I was taking swimming lessons. That and when I would swallow the water which would burn my throat. It happens to everyone and you should wear goggles to protect your eyes.

That is somewhat odd. It seems to me that your googles should block out the water. Maybe, you're allergic to the chorine?

        • Most of the time they do keep the water out, always have to re-adjust them when I swim. Happens with all brands I use, think it's just the wave my face is shaped. Doesn't put me off though I love swimming!

Hmm, might have been a bad pH in the pool or too much chlorine or something. I've noticed some pools are much easier to open your eyes in than others.

Never tried that much in the river or ocean or anything, all that debri floating around. Hah, I did wear goggles in the river once and that was weeeeird. River grass looks way creepy in crisp detail when you're surrounded by it.
