Is it normal to masturbate in public (please read description)

Before voting please recognize- I'm not talking about just ripping off my pants in every public bathroom I go to and wanking one out. Instead, I want to know if others masturbate when they get an unwanted erection, and need to get rid of it. For example, if I am with a girlfriend or other women I like, and I am wearing athletic shorts or sweatpants, I will usually go to the restroom and "ease the tension" so to speak, so it's not an issue anymore. If I have to wear tights, dance pants, or other tight clothing, I'll usually do the same before hand. Of course, if I have the chance to do this at home before hand I will (public restrooms are always a last "code red" solution). Is this normal? Or is it akward and unnatural?
