Is it normal to meditate to unwind?

I have been meditating each night for 5-10 minutes to learn to control my thoughts and emotions. I am not at all "hippie" but fear if I tell anyone they will think I'm barking mad. Is it normal to meditate in this way?

I meditate for a lot longer than that, because I'm fascinated with unlocking the power of the mind. I have discovered great things! It's awesome! I can give you an idea of something that i've discovered. It's part yoga relaxation technique with my own spin. First, you lay on your back and deep breathe. When u exhale, your body naturally sinks a little bit, while that happens, you visualize your whole body sinking into the ground (or bed, etc), keep doing this for a while. This helps you relax. Then, try to feel your own heartbeat somewhere within this process. If you have, for instance, a pimple u want to go away, focus on your heartbeat throbbing the pimple. Try to feel your heartbeat as strong as you can wherever it is you want to accelerate healing. Continue to relax.. if you can focus enough to the point you feel a sort of tingling sensation, it heals it even better...

Yes I think so... But I find it really hard to clear my mind for five whole minutes! Practice I guess. I feel calmer anyway. It feels nice to look forward to just five minutes a day when I can put aside worries and thoughts.

Many people, especially in India meditate. Be careful of self-induced hypnosis, which can cause hallucinations and possibly delirium. I recommend quiet contemplation at a suitable time and place instead.

Thanks :) A friend of mine is a hypnotherapist. She has helped me before and the similarities between the two made me think of meditating actually. I always felt so calm and nice after hypnotherapy when she was training and I was her guinea pig :)
