Is it normal to move your eyes like you're reading when you're thinking?

It's an in the moment thing, if I'm alone or near people, even if I was making eye contact if I'm making an assessment or something

I think it might be from reading a lot when I was younger

    It is perfectly normal.
You probably have strong sight-input memory.

I had a teacher at High school, who would during remembering something close his eyes and would run his pointy finger in horizntal lines in front of him, like he is searching in some imaginary book.

If we catch a nigga trying to read books or get an education in da hood we promptly bust a cap in his ass.

I tend to stare at something random and defocus when I'm pondering or day-dreaming, but what you describe doesn't sound weird to me.

It's just a guess, but maybe this is a strategy you developed at some point to keep your mental train on the tracks: if you flick your eyes around, you don't focus on anything in particular and so you can't be derailed into thinking about whatever you're looking at.

    • I do the stare too, and in both cases I defocus a lot

I haven't thought about it before, but I mostly do the reading eye thing if I'm doing something that requires concentration, like if I'm at work or something. I think maybe it helps keep my brain moving at a certain pace

The stare is usually if I'm going down a mental rabbit hole

Sometimes my eyes also jump around in no real pattern. Sometimes I feel like I defocus so much I'm looking into my brain through my eyes

Kinda seems more like a skill now instead of a deficit
