Is it normal to not be energised by working out

I run 5k 3 times a week, and I also go to the gym to lift 2 or 3 times a week, where I do a pretty standard work out of squats, deadlifts, barbell row etc. I love to exercise but I always feel completely drained after a work out. So much so that I often end up just sitting around drinking water for a couple of hours afterwards. I don't think I'm overexercising. Everyone tells me that workouts energise you but they always make me exhausted. As far as I'm aware I have no underlying health issues. Does anyone else feel like a workout always drains them?

(P.s I am British so please don't ask me to correct my spelling of energise)

First thing to look at is hydration and nutrition. Are you properly hydrated BEFORE you exercise? And are you getting the right pre- and post- exercise nutrition? Your body goes into recovery mode very soon after a workout. Make sure it has the needed nutrients to do this. Google it to find out what to eat when and the right supplements. There are also medical conditions that could cause this, but they are not common. If it’s not hydration and diet, you might mention it to your doc.

    • Hydration could potentially be an issue. I am from a cold climate and now live in a very hot and humid climate, so even though I think I'm drinking lots of water I do still sometimes get woozy because of the heat

It depends on what your workout consists of. Some people will do a very light exercise and doing something like that might leave you feeling energized, but if you are doing harder workouts then you should feel drained afterwards.

    • I do go pretty hard at the weights. I figure if I've bothered to go to the gym I should make it count and lift heavy.

Glad to hear you think it's ok to be drained after a workout. I thought I was just being a wimp

    • Could be a good shout actually because I don't currently use any supplement type stuff.

I'll give protein shakes a try
