Is it normal to not know what a consonant is?

I got an online friend, we were discussing names for our RP characters. I told her if she would like a character which name started with a vowel or with a CONSONANT. She asked me "What's a consonant?" I was speechless, I didn't know how to react since I thought that's something you learn in elementary school or earlier. She's 18, she goes to school, she got access to the internet, wtf?

Maybe she just had a brain fart. Don't make such a big deal about it. Just attempt to explain it to her, and get on with your life, lad!

No, really, I told her "Look up for it" since this kind of stuff always happen (like that one time she told me she didn't know who the Beatles were) and I always end up telling her. She just copy/pasted a bunch of complicated meanings and said "I'm bad with english".

I'm not the best either (english is not even my main language) but english is her ONLY language, she's american. I was asking because maybe in america the word "consonant" may not be so common but.......yeah really.

Does she not speak much English? That's the only explanation I can think of.

I don't think that is normal, how can you speak a language fluently if you have no idea how it works?

My opinion is biased though because there are very few bilingual people here, and I am not one of them.

I have always been disgusted when someone has a stupid question, and instead of googling it (they are obviously online) they ask you. Are they just trying to convince me they're dumb?

    Isn't a consonant things like "m" "b" "d"?

    -Edit-

Put the Consonants in parentheses for clarity.

It's not normal, but she probably just had a moment of memory loss. I forgot the word "carousel" once. We all make mistakes, I wouldn't worry.

Right so I posted a long reply to a different story and it somehow got posted on this story. Sorry OP, I deleted it :-S and now I feel obligated to put an answer to your story heh.

Maybe she didn't know the word for it? It's a disturbing thought that someone could NOT know what a consonant was...but perhaps she just didn't realise that that was the name for it?

I always judge how obscure words are by whether I know them in another language. Apart from English, there isn't a single other language I could tell you the word for either vowel or consonant in. I don't think it's normal to not know them in your own language, but some people really don't care about certain things. My friend doesn't know the capital of either Egypt or Greece. He says he doesn't care.
