Is it normal to not know whether you believe in god or not?

I don't know If I do or not, I always like say thanks every now and then, like if something good happens but it's not all spirituality and stuff, it's just like * look up* " Thanks, big guy!"

But I don't really go to church, and I don't pray, but sometime I believe in Heaven and Hell and sometime's I don't? Does this happen to other people?

I think loads of people are uncertain, and for good reasons too.

      Yes like childish immaturity?
Plus I suppose many really couldn't care less.

Other than that I don't know what you mean?
There are billions of reasons why we now know that things evolved naturally.
Why, even the human race is about 200,000 years old.
Do you honestly feel that for the rest of the 13,699,800,000 years before that that god was just getting ready for 'man in his own image'? LOL that's VERY funny :D Seriously you cannot see why this god nonsense is just man made myth? Oh dear :D

Watch out, I think he's watching you. Ha Ha ha :D

Um, I'm an Atheist.:/ And there's no need to take that tone, you haven't even heard what I thought the reasons to be uncertain were. Ok then.

I (and the government and all public schools and separation of church and state (state being that 'school kid thingy etc)) ALL feel some (most) certainty towards science and no god being involved with that.
There is no (not even 'some') certainty towards god at all! None. If anything all would say its 'belief' is so far beyond logic and reason that its absurd.

The only uncertainty is wondering how long it will be before the old myths die off.
Now you may suddenly think, oh that could take thousands of years (as it has been already) But the Internet (for home users) really started being strong only around Windows95 days (um that would be like less that 2 decades ago). Communication worldwide on what religious 'believers' feel to be true has all come too clear. I've always stated: "They believe in what?"
We have come a LONG way with religion out of law, out of schools, and most importantly fully accepted for not being a 'believer' in myths.

Since evolution has been proved as FACT now, all of a sudden we have people saying oh no they don't believe in the bible any longer (you know with miracles and half man half animal creatures and LOADS more crazy stuff, please check any google search about how crazy bible beliefs are not logically justifiable, and the evidence we see in the real world contradicts what it says). But NOW these 'believers' simply say they believe in god and are not actually religious? Say what? Isn't that totally against Christianity?

If the concern (you raise) is an uncertainty in a belief in god? Then that 'reason' would be towards common sense and rational reality reasoning. Of which is not a concern nor an uncertainty. Actually to the contrary it is fully accepted FACT that we acquire knowledge and continue human progression ONLY through science. As the old saying goes, what has god done for me lately? Absolutely nothing. Since the likelihood of any supernatural(s) existing has basically been seen as foolish thoughts.

What reasons could there be of any uncertainty towards a lack of belief in a god? Stupidity or ignorance possibly? Or childish immaturity or stubborn old men?
The human race is moving on. With advances in understanding our NATURAL universe its evolution and life itself. There is NO room for mythical backward non helpful unfounded beliefs in a magical god. As an 'atheist' I thought you would have known all of this already? What are you (or others) exactly unsure of? Does god exist? EXTREMELY unlikely, so much so that it is not even taught to children at public schools any longer, except as what people once thought to be true, the world is round - god really should have recited that into the bible, oh well he is a mistake of human thoughts and all.

What is your definition of atheist exactly? Mine is that we are open to the truth, oh dear we can't say that about people who 'believe' though who have NEVER not even once given an insy winsy reason why they believe except for a 'feeling'. I feel they're WRONG and with GOOD cause, but I'm happy for them to supply any reason (at all) why they 'feel' god may exist. Do note, I have never heard a valid reason to date, actually no one has.

          Edit//

Richard Dawkins (scientist), The God Delusion:

“The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”

I think you misinterpreted my point, which wouldn't have been difficult, since it was only a sentence and I didn't explain what I meant.

When I said "good reasons", I didn't mean "good" as in positive, but rather "understandable". Maybe I was wrong for writing it that way, but that's the way I write.

As for the reasons, you've touched on them. When I wrote it, I had religion's place in society in mind. Whether you think it's right or wrong, religion plays a huge role in culture etc etc. With a belief system as prominent as say, Christianity, it's easy to be uncertain. I'm not going to label people ignorant or whatever for feeling uncertain, but do you see where I'm coming from?

Basically, what I'm saying is that religion is perfect for some people. Death is terrifying, and a lot of people find comfort in religion because it offers them hope. They are told that there is an afterlife, we aren't insignificant, and life actually means something. It's very appealing.

Now please don't jump to conclusions again! I'm not saying any of that is correct or whatever. Those are just some of the reasons I was talking about, as to why some people are uncertain. It's really just my opinion.

But I wasn't trying to say that I'm uncertain. I don't believe in God or Hell or Heaven. All I was trying to say was that I can understand why others would. That's all:P!

Sometimes I use the thought of a god as refuge. To escape the thought that humanity and all of it's glory and sophistication is really all there is. I mean come on.. can you say well polished turds? Even these jerk offs that talk like they amount to anything wouldn't even be a visible spec in the grand scheme of all that is. The fact they think they know even a fraction of the infinitely vast amount of information and insight proves only their own ignorance and quiet desperation. Don't listen to narrow minded shit heads like these.. if you want to ponder god or something more by all means. No one brought about anything new or revolutionary listening to people like these thought they knew it alls. Behind their over inflated egos and seemingly intelligent minds is a very tiny tiny person so scared of not knowing they would ridicule anyone that would question. If Einstein, Socrates, or any great for that matter had settled for such ignorance where would be? Do you.. challenge everything in existence. Go all out. We could use more people like you and less people like them. Best wishes

Yeah, the correct term is agnostic. I believe in God, but I believe he gives us free will, including the choice whether or not to believe in him. Any religious beliefs are normal.

Yes it means you're aware at a certain level that religion is not fulfilling and there are way more answers out there. But questioning and curiosity is always good.

According to all Christians you are going to hell.
If you were born in the Middle east they may actually kill you for not believing in Allah!

I think its ok to do what you are doing, but for god's sake man (looks up) do NOT go any further than that.
Church is a cold lonely place, where you are slowly brought to your knees on how horribly sinful you are. It is NOT a good place. Plus if you intend on having kids one day, guess what, according to church barbaric law, you must drag them to church every Sunday (even on X-Mas and Easter !!!)

People who already attend church, have lost all logic and reason. Even now they 'feel' you are going to burn in hell for your lack of faith. Stay away from them, far away.
ok, I do look at packed churches on Sundays and laugh, whilst our family goes for a Sunday outing. But that's all. No contact.
