Is it normal to not treat a dog with mange?

I know of a dog who suffers from mange but the owner never does anything about it. This has been going on for several months now. I don't want to tell the owner what to do but I feel bad for the dog. Will it go away on its own?

This question is hilarious because "mange" means "vaginal pubic hair" in Japanese.

No there isn't! Just take the dog, u less you want it to die, and obviously the owner is not a good person if they are letting the dog go through so much pain, this is terrible!

Seriously, it doesn't matter if they get mad. If you make enemies in life, be proud. It means you stood up for something.

If you're sure it is mange, maybe you could tell the owner that mange is also dangerous to humans: long term exposure can lead to kidney failure.

If s/he doesn't care about the dog, maybe s/he cares enough about the humans in contact with it?

Report that asshole to ASPCA (I might be getting the name wrong:/) or to another esteemed animal agency.

No. It's not normal. I adopted a dog with Demodex Mange and she was 6 months old. Demodex is a mange you are born with and if she had been treated it wouldn't have become a chronic condition. Now she has mange about every 3 months

I know you would have a very hard time dealing with your inability to be the voice for a helpless creature who has no voice of his own. Be his voice and you will feel so much better in the long run. Would you sit by and watch an elderly, disabled person or a child that couldn't ask for help?

My very first dog, Sparky, had mange. He was a Jack Russell Terrior. We treated him. He ended up being ok. Eight years later he got terminal cancer from the treatment and died. I'm glad we treated him. He was the best dog I've ever had, and he had white fur with black spots. He was actually born with several black spots that shaped a dog paw print on his side. He was the sweetest dog.

  • i just looked up mange treatments and most (even vets) say borax and peroxide wash kills the eggs and is the starting point to eradicate mites. then the treatment for the irritated skin begins cocount oil to sooth etc. theres heaps on mange treatments on the web

And how will you feel when the dog dies?!
You'll be thinking that you could have prevented it. You will feel worse then! Think of the long term..

No! Mange and kill dogs!!! Tell them!! They NEED to treat the dog, if you tell the people and they don't do it then call animal control, that is very serious!

I agree with Simon's advice. You should probably mention it to the owner. Even if he/she doesn't like it, the dog needs to be treated.

Severe mange can kill a dog. It should never go untreated and if the owner refuses to treat it, they are neglecting their pet's needs. I don't know what country you are in but most have organisations devoted to the care of neglected animals. I think you need to report this case for the good of the dog. For yourself, too. Imagine how you'd feel if the dog died and you'd stood by and only watched.

It will only take a phone call to get it sorted. It's obviously bothering your conscience or you wouldn't have asked, then dappled gives you good advice and you say you'll think about it..... Grow up!

        • Yeah, but the dog's owner may get mad at me if I report it. There's no easy answer.

Email me the name and address of the owner and any other details you think I need and I'll report it myself regardless of what country you are in. I understand you don't want to get into trouble. You don't have to.

Don't write anyone's address on this site, by the way. Click on my name, it has my email address in the profile. Make up a fake email account if you want to but if you let me know, I'll deal with it for you.

First, you don't know if the dog has mange or something else. Second, if you haven't talked with the owner, you don't know whether he/she has treated the problem or not. And third, there are different kinds of mange and some types are not curable. What you need to do is mind your own business!
