Is it normal to obsessively brush your teeth?

I brush my teeth at least six times a day, and my family says it's annoying and that it's okay not to brush my teeth so much. I can't stop though, and my mouth feels really disgusting if I don't.

  • Over-brushing can damage the tooth enamel so try to cut down. In the long run, you could do more harm than good.

    No Brushing: NOT HEALTHY
Normal Brushing - about 3 times a day: ABSOLUTELY HEALTHY
    Brushing Obsessively: NOT HEALTHY

Could damage enamel (the protection around teeth).

My mom used to have toothbrushing races and see how many times you can brush it. The average amount of times was about 20 times, which was bad... Her uncle (or my great uncle) was a doctor, and told them that it could break the protection.

At least brush four to five times if you want to do it a bit more, but only do a minute and a half for everytime you brush it this much.

I brush my teeth everytime I eat something, unless I'm out for wile. When I go out for a long time, like dinner or so I bring my portable toothbrush.
Sometimes I brushed them more than 6 times a day and my dr never told me not to it.

You're gonna end up scrubbing all your enamel away if you keep up this rate. It won't grow back, and then you'll actually be more likely to get bad teeth than if you hadn't brushed so much. You're effectively doing the same work as the plaque you hate so much.
Also, every time you brush, you end up swallowing trace amounts of toothpaste. This can be harmful if it contains fluoride carbonate, which can act as a neurotoxin.

If you really have to continue doing this, use tooth brushes marketed for 'sensitive teeth',
    and non-fluoride toothpaste.

Too much brushing can damage your teeth, as can too little brushing. Have your gums been receding or prone to bleeding?

Are your gums not really sore?

Normal is tooth brushing probably somewhere around 2 to 3 times a day. I hope your flossing too because brushing alone doesn't get all the plaque in between teeth. If your obsessive tooth brushing is because yo breath be stanky then you probably need to see a doctor and find out if there is a medical cause for your halitosis.
