Is it normal to play bass guitar with a pick?
I can't seem to pluck with my fingers. Perhaps it's a problem with my being left handed and using a righty-guitar, but I don't really know.

Paul McCartney is one of the finest bass guitarists on the planet and he's not only a leftie but I think he plays both pick and finger style. Only going off observation here so people should feel free to correct me. I think pick sounds different so you may want to try and do both. And get yourself a leftie guitar to even up the odds against right handed players.
I play fingerstyle because I learned that way and it's easier for me. At the same time, I play guitar with a pick, naturally. But some songs call for a pick. For example, "Would?" by Alice in Chains. Mike Starr almost NEVER used a pick, but on that song he did. For tone. Whenever I play a few Nirvana songs like "in bloom" I use a pick generally, for tone.
It really doesn't matter what you use but I think that slap bass is soooo much cooler. Hey you ever heard of primus?
No, I haven't. But I'll check em' out yeah?
& Thanks you guys I was feeling like a total square after reading YouTube comments bashing bass-pick players.
I prefer the sound of a pick..but thats only because my finger picking is so sloppy I'd guess..I'll definitely practice using my fingers though
Depends on which tone you want, bassists like flea prefer to fingerstyle while bassists like paul mccartney prefer to use a pick.
I'm left handed and i play on a right handed bass, if playing fingerstyle you will get a lot better at it. I wouldn't buy a left handed bass if i was you
Some prefer fingerstyle, some prefer a pick. Just use which ever one you prefer, but I second the idea of a leftie bass and experimenting without a pick to see if you prefer the sound.
