In a way, I don't think it's normal because you are pretending to be something you aren't. You are leading people on, wether you intend to or not. It would be one thing if you were doing something akin to a character persona, but somehow let people know that the gay man was merely a character.

Most people would consider it not normal, but depending on what parts of the internet you hang out on... that and saying you're female online tends to attract a lot of unwanted attention, I can't blame you.

Just make sure you don't get too carried away and lead on guys who might actually be interested in who you're pretending to be.

I really frown on this but depending on how you go about it it *can* be okay and normal, maybe even fun. People always pretend to be something they are not online. but in the past I have totally crushed on girls that pretended to be gay guys that were really into me. I had a long distance relationship with one, she had pictures of another guy but later I got suspicious when she could not muster up proof of being that guy, she pretended to be dead for a couple days then later sent me an email with a long apology and I didn't talk to her for a long time then we spoke on a good note once or twice almost a year later. Never heard from her again. Another which we were just friends but I kinda liked her. She looked like a really cute "emo" boy. Yeah, I used to be totally into that. Now most of em are kinda gross to me (but not all) and online I do not believe in them one bit if I haven't seen them in person. They seem to be the most often faked profiles. Later through her friends I found out she was a girl and her new pictures online that were obviously NOT A BOY!

Folks in forums always assume I'm a guy until I make it clear I'm not. I think most people are fairly sexist and view women as passive and sweet and males as opinionated and aggressive...

I think I didn't correct a few ass wipes on a couple of occasions b/c they seemed cowed by my masculine presence when I was debating with them about something. lol... And, I did state my gender on another forum and they kept calling me a "dude" anyway.. Meh

No but it's normal to Role Play, I suggest googling for role playing forums or chatrooms. Because pretending to be something your not in a regular chat room is pretty messed up.
