Is it normal to psychoanalyze people
Pretty straightforward
Let me start by saying of course I can be wrong about things, I do know about hubris and presuppositions
But I'm really interested in analyzing people and testing how they react to things just to see what happens
Like at work, if I feel like someone is being difficult I'll find a way to make our interaction end quicker. To the people who like using as many syllables as possible to introduce the fact that they are at a restaurant to order food, I ask deliberate questions that are not open ended. To those who shamelessly try to take advantage of my kindness, I explain why I can't and just smile.
I also try to see what other people are thinking. The first thing I analyze is how they present themselves, because that's what they're choosing to show people; are they trying to present a certain image, how comfortable and relaxed are they, what does the overall image say?
Then with what they say and how they talk, I can usually get a feel for why they're saying it and what they want as a result and why they're trying to get it. My ears are finely tuned instruments that can pick up on tonality and how serious someone is. Probably the two biggest factors I listen for are intelligence and maturity.
Then I start assessing their mental state, which may sound absurd but is actually quite easy if you remain enthusiastically objective. I usually look in their eyes, see how they're looking (like how the muscles around their eyes are being used), how they're holding their faces, mouths, heads, cheeks. Usually fake or weak people crumble here, but I'm fine with that since I wouldn't want to know that kind of person.
In general it's not hard to see that I am analyzing the person I'm talking with, and most random people keep it formal which I'm totally fine with. I think being obvious about it keeps it wholesome, since typically I demonstrate I could be sneaky and vindictive but choose to pursue positive rapport.
What's really amazing, though, is seeing someone who's doing the same thing, especially if I think they're doing it better. I usually have the best conversations with these people, because it doesn't even matter what's being said; the real conversation is between the lines and something about that is so much more authentic and trustworthy.
But one thing I cannot stand are people who play dumb so intelligently. I don't even know how to counter that, since most of the time it would be petty on my part. Unless I'm mentally fatigued, then I don't care about being a smart ass as much.
So, how normal is it to do stuff like this? How do you feel about people who do this?
