Is it normal to pull out my hair?

obviously its not, i just need to know how i can stop myself from pulling out my hair without professional help or spending money or telling people non-anonymously. theres only like 3 ppl that know (until now) and i have done some research and self-diagnosed myself with trichotillomania. i dont eat the root or anything. i just pull it out and i think at this point its just a habit and i hate it and it looks bad. sorry im rambling.. to recap
- i pull out my hair (EVERYWHERE)
- i want to stop
- i dont want some psychologist to tell me what to do because i would rebel and like do the opposite or something.
- i just want to know what someone who has had a similiar problem and gotten better did to fix it? like.. did u do something instead? idk.

Thanks guys,
ANON.

p.s.- no dumbass answers. im serious. you please be serious. i hate it when ppl come on sites like this and try to be funny

I have Trich and it's a pain in the ass. There IS no cure for it, the best way to deal is just willpower. It sucks, but it's all you can do. It will never go away, so just try as hard as you can to let it grow out. That's what I'm doing. I doubt my eyelashes will ever grow out completely again x_x

Unfortunately you need to see a professional, I know you don't want to hear this but trust me you'll regret it when you're bald. If you see your regular doctor and tell them the problem they can recommend people. We're not professionals, sure we can throw suggestions at you but this is all in your head, YOU need to sort it out and a psychiatrist may be able to push you in the right direction

  • It's called Trichotillomannia, it's a form of OCD I think.

Try counting how many you pull out in a day/week/month. And lets say you pull out 20 in a day. Try only pulling out 15 the next day and reducing it by 5 every day. It will be hard work but 1) it will look better 2) it wont annoy you as much about having to keep doing it and 3) you dont need professional help just alot of willpower.

Maybe it's just a bad habit. Try going a week wearing a swim cap over your hair so you can't mess with it. I know you don't wan to, but I think the bet thing to do would be to get help

If you're not going to do what a professional tells you, how the hell are our dumb-asses going to help you? They know what the fuck they're talking about. That's their job genius. If you really want to stop, you've got to assess your will power. Are you weak? Or are you strong? No one can change you, except you. The power is in you, and you alone. The only way any one can help is if you let them. You must accept their words and will into your soul. That's why you need a professional. They understand this. Don't do this w/just any idiot off the street, or in this case, on the web. Good luck, you'll need it.

I disagree with nearly everything this person had to say.

"how the hell are our dumb-asses going to help you?"
-Well, that is just negative. It helps to connect and share experiences with people who have gone through what you are struggling with. There are lots of support sites and groups on the internet.

"Are you weak? Or are you strong? No one can change you, except you. The power is in you, and you alone."
-It doesn't have to do with being weak or being strong. All you can do it try to control the urge to pull.

Health professionals BARELY understand Trich. There is something called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that you can look into but science does not really understand the cause nor the cure for Trichotillomania. Almost everyone could benefit from a bit of therapy.

I want to say that "I have cured my trich and you can too! Here's how. . .!" but I can't. Everyday is a struggle with Trich. Some days are good and some days are not so good. Best of wishes to you!
