Is it normal to pull out your hair?

I like to pull out my hair, (on my head) I don't know why. Is it normal?

No, it's not. It's called trichotillomania, and I have it too.

I have it too, but my Mum just slaps me or yells at me... Until I find myself doing it again lol.

I pull out my eyebrows, my chest hairs...
      Head hair...
      I have OCD too though.

I wouldn't say it's normal...but I had that exact problem about a year back. I was literally stuck at home for about a year and a half and I developed some really weird habbits, including hair pulling. Then I went back to school and got back in contact with friends and all my weird habbits went away. After therapy too of course.

There are a variety of different methods to stop that you can try yourself. I like to wear several bracelets to play with, so I have something else to do with my hands. Wearing a hat can also help. If you wear a bracelet that jingles or makes noise when you move, the sound can help you be more aware of when you're reaching up to pull your hair out, which can be helpful until you get used to it. Some people also get acrylic nails, which makes plucking out hairs with your fingers more difficult, even if you get short acrylics.

There are some other methods listed here: http://www.trich.org/treatment/50WaystoStopl.html

And there's a discussion of the pros and cons of fake nails to stop trichotillomania here: http://atrichysituation.blogspot.com/2011/01/acrylic-nails-old-staple.html

There are other resources out there. If you can't stop by yourself, though, you might want to see a doctor. Managing anxiety can be a very important part of managing trichotillomania.
