We have a very old German Shepherd who can barely walk and rarely makes it outside to use the bathroom. We are about to move across the country. Is it normal that we are going to put him down before we leave simply because it will be less of a hassle and he will be able to die happy?
i agree that its the right thing to do for the dog since the change would be bad at any age over about 12. they get very set in their ways and massive change traumatizes them.
but to say that its a hassle does sound cold and unfeeling
My vet said when your animal has no quality in his life, it's time. Does he show any joy in life like wanting to play etc. If not, then your choice should be easier.
It's probably the "right" thing to do but it would be very difficult to do. Remember, all that poor dog wants is to be with you. I had to put my Yorkie down at 14 years. Her kidneys had failed and there was no choice. It was heartbreaking,
For me yes, one of my aunts had a 25 year old cat and she put it to sleep before her big move because she didn't think that she would make it. If your dog can barley walk and can barley make it outside. Id say it is close to the end. Ive had to put down pets and its not an easy decision. Just be there when the vet puts it to sleep I hate people who walk out when their animal is being put down. Your pet was always there for you and you should always be there for your pet.

give him away, at least. how does that not break your heart knowing you'd rather kill an animal you love than friggin DEAL with the poor, sick pup? common sense is in the heart..

I couldn't do it but that's because I've had to put down a very sick pet. I felt horrible and guilty for a long time even though the pet was very sick couldn't keep food down for a long time.
hmmm i dont know its a good thing but your doing it for the wrong reasons owners are suppost to have a special bond with there dogs and maybe your upset about it but putting your dog down because it would be too much hastle is well sad and heartless my dog had 2 paralysed legs and we kept her she was ok still fighting her disability it never stopped her from trying but one day she just couldnt go on we could see it in her she couldnt go on so we left it for a week and she just seemed misreble we knew it was time to let her go and we all said our good byes and everything fuck i miss her she was with me since i was a child like 4 years old child my advice is DO NOT let your dog go unless you see that she has no want to live take your dog with you and if the dog is fighting to come with you then you will know if your dog is ready to go ot still wanting to fight its age
That's very normal. It's good that you guys are doing that though. It's better he goes out happy and knowing his family loves him, rather than have something bad happen to him because of old age. I know it probably hurts but he loves y'all[:
It's not that normal but is better for him the stress could kill him so good for yall he will be much happyer
It's not selfish at all!! If he can barely walk then his quality of life right now is very low. Even if you weren't moving across country, I would recommend euthing him. I'm an animal welfare inspector so it's a educated opinion too
