Is it normal to really hate it when people speak spanish in the store?

This drives me crazy! So I hate it when I am in the store and someone by me is speaking Spanish. Or even worse, I once saw a woman demand a teller who could speak Spanish. I have a deep hate for illegal immigrants because we have worked hard for the freedom that we have and they feel it's right to just come into America and take our jobs, houses, etc. I might be more okay if they weren't commonly so rude about being here like how they commit so many crimes and such. It really just drives me crazy!

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Mexicans in Mexico, I just hate it when they come to America and are ungrateful for the freedom we have here..

I find it rude if people can speak English but choose to speak a different language in my presence thus excluding me from the conversation.

What if it's strangers, though? They're not obligated to speak English to include you.

You are correct, they have no obligation but I have a right to be offended.

I'm fine with tourists speaking another language but if I'm in a foreign country I try my hardest to learn and speak their tongue.

I just think its the right thing to do.

People who speak English still sometimes speak their first language with each other, though. It's a way to keep yourself from forgetting how to speak it, and it's nice to relax every so often when you're normally constantly struggling to communicate in a second language. Sure, if you have the resources, it's best to learn the language of the country you're going to, but can you honestly say that if you were, say, visiting China with some friends, you'd never speak English to your friends in public?

I would, but I would also be conscious of the effect it could have on others.

I don't care if a customer is speaking Spanish. What I can't stand is when I used to go to Walmart. An employee would speak in English but it was so hard to understand over the PA system. They shouldn't be allowed to talk over it. EVERYONE needs to understand.
A friend of mine is German. She went to DMV once and demanded to see the German translation of their booklets. She speaks perfect English, but tried to prove a point that the US caters to the non-English speaking people.
My children were ignored in school because the teachers spent so much time with the other kids that couldnt speak English. Not just me, but other parents complained also. We were told to get a tutor. They didn't care.
If you move to a country that you don't understand the language, please learn the language.
I think it's great to have more than one language. Just dont live here for 20 years and still say "yo no hablo ingles".

So war isn't longer hard work? America has freedom because we earned it. If Mexico has all sorts of drug issues, that's their problem. If you want to come into our country go through the regular process - I have no respect for anyone coming into this country illegally.

I don't like it either. And most of the people I hear discussing it also hate it. We have had business' close down and entire neighborhoods vacate because the presence of illegals was so vast that the rest of the town stayed away. Thankfully, that drew enough attention that all the illegals got deported...we still have immagrints but they are legal and have been here for ages and everyone knows them and it's not a big deal...but it was bad here for a time and the behavior was out of control....I'm sure you think I'm lying or uptight but that honestly is not the case. We are a rural town about 15 miles from the next big town... Small and quiet...the sidewalks roll up at dark lol...for some reason it got over run with illigals a few years back...we had our first murder in a decade (a knifing over a card game in a trailer full of illigals) more followed three more that year all in the illegal community...suddenly drug busts fights and thefts along with various forms of assault and damages.....it was in the paper constantly, plus guys drinking and hanging out on steet corners at all hours....obviously it wasn't every single member of the community but it's was bad...anyway a task force came in and started busting...also we went from a police force of 3 to upwards of 8 and the county got more involved...it was a mess. Maybe, because it had such a huge impact here it set my mind...

  • hahaha... You better start learning spanish, ese. especailly if you live in LA.

I had to take a bus to work for a while, and on some mornings the whole fucking bus was speaking Canto (chinese dialect).

Sure, it's a piss off -I'm white and i know just a few words here and there, but mostly just gives you a headache.
But what can you do? We live in a multicultural society, take it or leave it, but there is no need to be a racist about it.

Oh, and America is a continent, not a country. Where most of the countries speaking spanish, so be a good neighbour and stop whining.

Well, I'm not Mexican but Spanish is my first language. You can't hate someone for something they don't know. And, talking in general, no matter what language it's a personal choice and basically what freedom of speech is based in. You're free to say you hate it, they're free to do it, whether you love it or not.

    Is it your store?

So basically Native Americans should hate all white English speakers?
Let people speak what they want to speak; and as for illegal immigration, the moment you realize that people on the other side of the border are humans, and basically immigration involves this notion that you have to stay in the system you were accidentally a part of, just cause, unless you benefit the other system, is fucked up, is the moment you stop being stupid.
My best friend is an illegal immigrant. Her mum went through awful shit and she was never allowed into the States.
If they would have stayed there, they'd be dead. All because of something they had no control over.
I'm happy, even if she did take up some lazy American's job.

So, if someone is speaking spanish in a store..they're automatically an illegal immigrant?

Last I heard, there was freedom in Mexico too. In fact, most of the world has some form of it.

If you buy, steal, invade or take the half of China, it is going to be a high possibility to have 500 to 700 millions of Chinese people, don't try to find blonde people speaking English.

I love how you seem to think saying "I don't hate Mexicans in Mexico" will convince people that you're not racist.

But there was nothing said about hating Mexicans in the U.S.! haha. Freedom of SPEECH., don't judge unless you've lived someone's life.

Freedom of speech doesn't mean that nobody can or should criticise what you say. In fact, it means just the opposite: you can say what you want, but other people can say what they want in response. It also has nothing to do with not judging people.

Also, they said that they have a "deep hate for illegal immigrants", so uh… yes, they did. Not all Mexicans in the US are illegal immigrants, of course, but guess what? Hating illegal immigrants is racist. It's especially racist considering that the OP seems to be assuming that anybody who speaks Spanish in public is an illegal immigrant. If you hate somebody for their country of origin, ethnicity, and language, we have a word for that. It's racism.

I am not saying I think all Mexicans are illegal immigrants, I'm just saying there is a fine line between speaking you native language and being rude about it.

Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacist. Why do you assume everybody who speaks Spanish is an illegal immigrant?

  • alv1592

You don't know these people, so how do you know they're illegal immigrants? And as you stated, it IS a free country, so they have the right to speak their native language to each other. They just need to know how to communicate in English, so as long as they can do that, no need to be annoyed.

    Hence freedom.

¿Qué "trabajo duro" has hecho por tu libertad? Usted dice que son ingratos por la libertad que tenemos aquí. ¿Qué pasa con la libertad de hablar en español si así lo desean?

(What "hard work" have done for your freedom? You say they are ungrateful for the freedom we have here. What about the freedom to speak Spanish if they wish?)

Still, look at how cray cray shit is down in Mexico. Drug cartels just dumped off a massive amount of bodies of people they killed on some highway down there a few months ago. Cartels that we created and support with our War on Drugs. I cannot judge illegal immigrants, because everyone will do what it takes to survive, many of them are honest people trying to give their families a better life, some of them had to leave their families to come here. I won't judge, because I've never been in a situation like that.

But if we really want to stop the illegal immigration problem, it would help if we ended the War on Drugs that is feeding the massive amounts of crime in the south. Do you know how much of the weed in the U.S. comes from Mexico? I don't even have a number, but end the foolish prohibition, and you'll stop turning ordinary people into criminals, fueling all these negative stereotypes that you hear about so much.

The best way to end the drug problem would be for everyone to stop using drugs. The cartels only make money because they have clients that want their products.

Or end the Drug War, end criminlization and regulate said drugs, making it safer for the users and still getting rid of the cartels. What do you think would be easier? Convincing over half the world's population to stop using (Especially if you're gonna start talking about weed here... do you really want to deny sick people something that works so well?) isn't exactly going to be easy, people are going to be nothing but resistant to that. So just make them legal, produce them safely, sell them on your own soil and kill the cartels that way. It's worked for other countries. And other countries have been condemning the United States for their failed drug war. It's only a matter of time.

You are right, but the chances of decriminalisation and regulation are about as likely as everyone quoting drugs. It's a shame. Its such an obvious solution but I don't think it will ever happen.

I'm still sort of hopeful, with all the pressure from other countries especially. Even if we can't achieve full decriminalization immediately, cannabis is slowly paving the way. :P

The real issue, really, is encouraging people to think for themselves.
