Is it normal to recognize license plates when commuting?

Is it normal to sometimes recognize specific cars, and license plates, while commuting - on the highway or in the parking lot? I do not do this on purpose but these things just catch my eye. Some of the plates are vanity plates, but others are not. Just numbers and letters that stick in my mind.

    I even recognise boring ones. I've always presumed it was normal.

    I assign anacronyms to them especially if it is a friends car so I know it's them without staring into the window

    Perfectly normal. I always repeat them in my head. not just the custom ones, but all.
