Is it normal to respond to your cat’s meowing?

Ok, so I have two beautiful cats that are pretty chatty. I say this as in they meow a lot. Every time they come in the house they will meow at me, as a greeting, and I will mimic them in response. I’m not sure if they interpret this as a mutual greeting, or if they appreciate it or not, but through time it’s gotten instinctual. Like I’ll almost automatically meow back at them, even if there are friends and family around. I got a few awkward stares sometimes but I can’t help it. Does anyone else do this or is it just me being an odd ball?

I've had cats most of my life (60 years) and they meow at humans, dogs, little kids who piss 'em off, or when they want out, or are hungry, or when they are injured, or want affection, etc.

Generally, when cats are quiet, is when they're sick, or if they live in an abusive household, and are trying to stay "under the radar".

Different breeds communicate differently.... just like dogs, birds, etc.

Humans are smart animals that tend to imitate what they hear or see. So it is pretty common for pet owners to do pet noises when their pets are doing so.
I also meow back at my cats. Cats love being talked to in a gentle way when they need attention, either it is meowing back or simply talking.

Cats actually only meow to people. It is not a way they correspond with other cats, they have a lot of other sounds in their repertoire for that. I wonder myself if meowing back is kind or condescending lol, they definitely do respond to human language with a kind and loving tone.

    • Thanks so much for the response! I never knew it was a thing they did solely with humans 0.0 I just wonder if they expect a poorly imitated meow in response lol

    • I fear they sometimes think I’m mocking them...wait are they even capable of understanding stuff like that? 0.0

        No, they're not. They're cats.

    • I guess if you do it on your own it doesn’t seem so weird, but it’s the fact that I will automatically go to meow at them even if there are people around...and now I’ve got a reputation for it haha

I see but I say it's still normal, cats are fun to annoy.
