Is it normal to rub knotted string between my fingers?

Ever since I was a little kid, I've liked to rub string between my fingers. I started out with a loose string from one of my stuffed animals and continued with this throughout my adolescence. For a while, my family knew about it and joked about it. But as I got older, I began to feel embarrassed and I hid my habit. I am now in college and I have a long commute. I carry a piece of string with me at nearly all times, in my pocket or in my car, to play with. Ideally, the string is thicker (many strands woven together) and knotted, because this provides a better texture for rubbing. It helps me relax and is just so enjoyable. My fingers are calloused from rubbing. I do this every single day. I don't see why I should stop because it isn't a destructive habit or interfering with my life. I'd just like to see if anyone else does this too.

That sounds like a great idea, normally I would play with a pocket knife (flip it out, rub my fingertips against the blade, flip it back in, twirl it around, etc.), I think it might have something to do with my Aspergers Syndrome but I know people with ADD/ADHD and OCD fidget a lot too, so it is really just fidgeting.

But I think pharmaceutical psychology is a fucking joke 95% of the time. I think fidgeting is normal, we all do it in different ways.

I agree that the texture feels good. As long as you're not rubbing really hard, then there's no reason to stop

Sounds fine. Depending on how much pressure you're rubbing with you could compromise your knuckles or bones in your fingers/hand, but otherwise it seems like a way better habit that skin-picking or hair pulling.

I did that too, but I quit. But if I have a chance, I do it secretly.
