Is it normal to shoplift food

i shoplift at the grocery store regularly. i never plan to do so ahead of time. it just happens. i go to buy milk and a couple of other stapes, and i end up stealing a wedge of cheese, a bottle of salad dressing, a bag of candy, a can of whipped cream. mostly stuff i don't need. i feel guilty about it, so i compensate by buying more items than i had originally planned to, so i don't feel like i'm totally ripping off the grocery store. i know this is totally stupid. it's embarrassing, and i would never admit it to anyone i know. it makes me feel terrible about myself, but i can't stop. it's almost like i secretly take pleasure in the guilt it gives me. and then there's the fact that rationally, i know food prices are ridiculously jacked up and it pisses me off. this is my incredibly lame attempt at revenge against circumstances i have no power over.

i am curious how many other people out there steal food. like regularly.

  • You should just stop. Or maybe some day a security agent will come get you and ask you why you have a watermelon under your shirt, but you'll say it's only your fat tummy. Pretty embarrasing.

I think you may have mild kleptomania

It sounds like it's becoming a problem and it is also theft, no matter how small. You should see a doctor about your urge to steal. You could have kleptomania.

helpful point, pepper. i'm aware that the problem isn't the grocery stores themselves, which is why my actions are still irrational. in my eyes the grocery store is just an extension of what is a much larger unfair economic and political system. and only goes to reinforce my feeling of powerlessness in the face of these latter. i know i need to cathect my anger in a way that would make something productive of it. still, this feeling of powerlessness is hard to temper, or sublimate for that matter. the reason i posted on this site in the first place was because i did think that more people might share this feeling. in fact, i do believe that the reason americans are such wonderful consumers is because purchasing power is a perfect substitute for real power. you buy things, and value the ability to buy things, because you don't actually have any real power in this world...

Actually, supermarkets have the narrowest profit margins of just about any business enterprise. The person you're stealing from makes about 2-4% profit on every item. (Restaurants tend to triple the price the item costs them. Maybe you should be stealing from restaurants.) That's the case in the U.S., anyway.

wise and ang, it's true that i'm "justifying it" here, but only because i actually do believe that part of the reason i steal goes way beyond the thrill aspect of it. i mean, it's not like i'm stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise here. maybe more like 10 bucks. and after years of having done this, there's really nothing very thrilling about it anymore. it's more like a habit i can't break. and one that stems from genuine anger.

the justification part is completely valid in my eyes. food prices are jacked up, and it's because of our imperialist neoliberal economic practices which allow jerks on the stock market to speculate on food prices. THIS is true stealing in my eyes. these people are the reason that 3/4 of the world actually can't afford to feed themselves. because grain prices are inflated, sugar prices are inflated. it's not because sugar and grain are actually inherently expensive. it's because an elite top strata is allowed to make money off of a basic human need--the need to ingest food.
for the first time in history we have the technological prowess to feed the entire world. instead, more than half the world's population is starving, while a couple fatass countries get fatter. and throw ships of food into the water to "regulate" supply and demand.
now, i find this nauseating, and the fact that i can't do anything about it makes me feel powerless and disillusioned with the political system. because really, no matter how you vote, you're simply NOT going to change the already disastrous effects neoliberalism has had on the world. it sparks this anarchist vein in my body.

it's too easy to reduce this particular habit of shoplifting to the "for the thrill of it" narrative. i'm a little beyond that. i'm not five years old anymore, and i think my problem is more complex.

to the other posts...well, they're not even worth addressing.

I agree with wise, seems like you're getting off on the thrill of just stealing anything. You probably will not stop until you get caught.

  • Lol believe it or not, it's a psychological condition. It's like an addiction to the thrill and getting away with it. You're even justifying it now. You should stop before someone else does.
