Is it normal to shut off the water in the shower while lathering?

It seems that, when most people shower, they run the water for the entire time that they are in the shower. I personally don't like this. Having the water running all the time means that soap is quickly rinsed off your skin, and that it can be hard to keep soap on a washcloth as you lather up. Simply put, I feel like I get cleaner if I shut off the water while I lather. Plus, I save both soap and water in the process. Yet, it doesn't seem like this is a very common way to shower. Is this normal?

Logically, I think that makes sense.

I just point the water in a different direction from where I am washing.

This would certainly help to keep soap from just washing away, but would do nothing to reduce water or energy usage.

Yeah, but it takes my shower a long time to heat up. If I turn it off it goes cold. So I would be freezing half the time.

I do that so I don't run out of hot water.

It helps save energy. Your water bill won't be so high either

I turn the water off to pretend I live in the desert. It's fun to practice survival.

I don't do this when I shower (ideally I probably should), but I do turn off the water while I'm scrubbing my hands with soap.
