Is it normal to stick things to your lips compulsively?
This weird habit of mine started when I was in elementary. I would 'suck' on the neck hem of my nightgowns, except it never really went in my mouth. I would just wet my lips and stick the fabric there until it dried, peel it off, and do it all over again.
As I hit puberty, I had branched off from nightgowns and gone on to do the same to specific facecloth fabrics as well as toilet paper. It HAD to have a specific feel and absorbency to it for it to be right. T-shirts were usually great for it, though toilet paper (and sometimes even writing paper if I was in a bind) was my go-to thing.
I didn't realize it was even a habit until almost high school, where it would start to feel like one of my OCD triggers when I denied myself the sensation. I would find myself licking at my lips as if preparing for the fabric and I simply could not focus if the fabric did not present itself.
Lately, my work has gotten in new paper towels that work even better, I I have started doing it at work when there are no customers around. It's like a smoke fix. It's almost impossible to ignore, which wouldn't be so bad if it didn't dry out my skin so much. My lips are almost always on the verge of cracking since the fabrics or paper towels seem to take out more moisture than I gave them to start with.
I tried looking up things like this under OCD, but sadly I have come up short. There's plenty of information on fingertip sensations (which I have and must ignore or it will drive me up the wall) but nothing on lips. It isn't really an oral fixation since there isn't anything IN the mouth. Just on it. Sometimes the need goes up the lip towards the base of the nose, but that's rare. Usually its either the whole lip (top and bottom) or juts a very specific point on the upper lip (usually a scant dot right in the middle).
Does anyone else have this particular OCD trigger? If so, how do you cope, if at all? I'm spending a fortune on lip balm for the side effects!
