Is it normal to succeed without college?

I'm 19 and I went to college for a semester. I'm a smart guy, really am, I just didn't put forth much effort. I'm on academic probation now (which means I got less than a 2.0 GPA) and school has never been my thing, now I took a semester off to work and I'm debating on whether I should even go back.

I definitely respect people who go to college, try, and leave with degrees, but I feel like going to college really isn't as vital as people make it out to be.

Plenty of people succeed without degrees, and I'm sure I have the potential to be one of them. Also, I'm not biased at all against college, so if you think it's worth it to go, tell me why you think that.

My son told me right off he wanted to go into the trades. I helped him go to tech school, and finance his tools, and now he's in the auto industry, and owns 2 houses. Nothing wrong with honest work, but always keep your options open. You may want to go back to school later.

    • Very true. Thanks for the comment, especially from an older adult's perspective. It's always nice to have.

I dropped out. I didn't want to, had family issues and my college was overseas so had to come home. Got deppressed for a long time and was "lost".

Then I started saying "I've wasted a year of my life doing nothing, time to make some damn money".

Started my frist job, worked my butt off for 2 years with decent pay. Now im in a new company making more money and with a bright future for me to expand and grow.

There are still guys from uni I went with who dont have jobs, who have issues, who have shitty jobs, who are not being productive and some are just sore out of luck.

A lot of it (not all) comes down to character.

It's all in YOU! and what YOU want. You want a degree? Go get one. You want to leave school and work? Then do it.

You do not have to have a degree to be successful. I know that because I dont and I am and there are many other people, even Bill Gates who dropped out.

You'll only get as much as you want from life depending on the amount you put into it.

Do what you want bro, but do it good!

The education system doesn't favour everyone, and failing in the education system doesn't mean you'll fail in the real life system. That said, doing well in college can give you a useful leg-up in a lot of industries as opposed to starting near to the bottom.

My cousin finished college recently and got an internship and still doesn't have a job yet. So I agree when you say that you don't need a college degree to succeed. There are other options , you just have to explore them and work your butt off

    • Exactly. That's what I was thinking of doing. I don't want to give up, I just would feel a bit more beneficial if I worked while others were in school...then again, they say college is *the* four years of your life (well, depends).

Yes! You can always go back to college when you are successful or take classes that you enjoy! Too many people are going to college these days...

It isn't normal. It's rare. You can succeed, but probably not have as much money. Unless you create a company like Facebook, or Beanie babies lets say. To me success basically means having a happy life. If my life is happy most of the time then yeah I would say my life is successful. Because there could be a person as rich as Bill Gates but cheats on his wife and has children with multiple women and has cancer, I would not call that a successful life. To me a successful life is not measured by money. I know people that are really rich and yet they have all sorts of problems, but I know people that are not very rich or even poor and yet they are very very happy with where they are in life. Id depends on your choice of what success is. You can get a job, make money find love and that is success enough. College doesn't always guarantee that.

I work in a creative field and frequently collaborate with very talented people in technology. While all the creative folks I work with have degrees, I've noticed that a lot of the tech folks don't. It depends on what you want to do-- In some fields, you can succeed without the degree, but you'll need to learn valuable skills and find someone who will give you a job where you can prove yourself. If you're not feeling college, I definitely think you shouldn't be wasting your time and money. Take some time off, get a job waiting tables or something, decide what you really want to do with your life. If you're 19, you've got plenty of time.

There are a few ways to become successful

    College-well paid job
Minimum wage job-hard work and determination-promotion
Trade-specialise or supervise or start own business.
Entrepreneur-kick ass-make money (if you are asking us what to do this isn't you sorry)
    Win the lottery
    Sue someone
    Rob a bank.

Unless you have an amazing talent you haven't told us about, a degree is the best base to start from if you can find work.

    • The last three are irrelevant, obviously. You're right about entrepreneurship - relates more to original thinking, I'd say. Asking for ideas won't get you too far through that. Thanks for the comment

Do you really think that success is that easy to attain??

    • Not at all. I choose to work doing hands on work rather than academically achieving it. You can respect that, right?

Absolutely, my brother studied until he was thirteen and could not go further because he was a 'weak' student. My mother sent him in a academy where he learned electric. He had been to the Seychelles where he had worked as electrician in a big hotel and made very good money there. The people there are always calling him wanting him to come back.

Certainly. He got a little help though. My aunt was an important woman in the region and she had some contacts...
