Is it normal to suddenly feel sleepy when petting cat?

Even after taking a bath and having breakfast and totally prepared for college when waiting for my class, petting a cat on my bed will make me so sleepy despite of me actually have enough sleep at night.

Note: I like cats a lot, but decides not to have one because I don't think I'm responsible enough to have cat, so sometimes I just carry my neighbor cat into my room and pet them until I'm happy and let them out.

Maybe petting the cat feels comforting?

Animals always seem to have a nice calming effect on people.

Petting my boyfriend's mini dachshund helps me relax. Though when I'm done, she gets angry and demands more petting. XD

Small dogs can be quite demanding.

Yep. I don't mind it too much though. I'll give her hugs and she'll do this thing where she leans into the hug. When I stop she gets upset. Dachshunds have fragile spines and I'm always afraid of hurting her. I never do, but I try to be cautious.

Odd question but do cats enjoy hugs? XD

My cat seems to enjoy it when I hug him, and he is super cuddly. He likes to be the little spoon. Of course he's a little cat, but I bet if he was a puma he'd still prefer to be the little spoon. He can be kinda demanding, but it suits him quite well.

Not sure about feeling sleepy like you but I did honestly feel like my anger waned and getting calmer while petting my cat when I was angry. Cats are magical.

I agree with this! It’s very relaxing and I love their little furry bodies close to me. They are warm and the purr is so lovely.

That could be a sign that you are allergic to cats. There are several types of allergies - and not all of them have you swell up (IgE - typically fast swelling). The next most common is IgG (typically food may take a week or 2 to develop, may take a week or more to go away), then IgM...

Its not uncommon for people to notice some exhaustion when experiencing an allergic reaction. Some people experience rather extreme exhaustion.

Do you get sleepy when petting a dog? If not, then assume that you have an allergy to cats; and work to learn more about the issue (its really from their saliva when they lick their fur); and take appropriate avoidance actions.

    I wish you the best,

I never pet dogs for religious reason, also from my latest test about 6 years agoI’m allergic to dog. But cat, it doesn’t show any symptom on my skin so the doctor doesn’t mention anything about it.

But I’ll probably do allergic test again later ( you know I’d be quite awkward showing up on hospital just asking for allergic test without any recommendation from any doctor, I’ll ask for it when I also have other reason to see doctor, and discuss it further).

Thank you for your recommendation your best wishes.

Your welcome. Further information is that the skin test only tests for IgE reactions; and does not catch all of them either - but does a reasonable job. The medical profession focuses on IgE because its the most common one to cause issues, its the one that causes Asthma and also severe immediate reactions that can kill certain people (peanuts, bee sting, and many more), and the one that an Epi-pen works on).

My recommendation is to talk with an allergist and discuss the other potential types of allergies and what could be causing the exhaustion. (My memory is that there are at least 5 Ig"x" allergies).

        I wish you the best...

Yeah, I don't like that. Lots of people say cats run away, but many are abducted.
