Is it normal to think all dogs should be taught/obey basic commands?

Basic commands like sit, stay, come, things like that. All dogs should know these and people should take the initiative and teach them to their dogs. If you want a pet that doesn't listen to you, get a cat!

  • Some of my neighbours' dogs know the command "shut up!" I've tested them. (;

      My dog is well acquainted the command "fuck off" from when he annoys my dad while he's working :P He quite happily trots away to find someone else.

      I think the OP is right that dogs should know some commands. I've known plenty of dogs who would run gaily into oncoming traffic if they hadn't been taught to come back :P

    Of course! Nothing worse than a dog that doesn't listen (they are sometimes worse than kids).
    btw my cat actually does listen some of the time to basic stuff like 'come here" and "get off the table".

    Yes, all dogs should be taught basic commands, especially to come command if you let them off lead (it's the bane of my bloody life when someone can't control their dog off lead, fyi, you on one side of the field, and your dog on the other side, is not control.)

    Agree to some extent. My sister trained her German Shepherd in both English and German commands but he mostly goes by German (like when we want him to lay down we say "Platz"). He listens better to German commands I think because German words sound more powerful.

    Yep. "Sit!" "Get down!" and "Drop!". Especially if you have a jumpy dog. Bonus points if you can get them to sit while you feed them or if they know to grab things out of your hands gently. It aggravates me no end when people with huge dogs don't teach them to either not jump or to get down at a simple command. I'm a small person, and a full sized German shepherd can quite easily knock me over. Please teach it to not jump on people.

    My Siamese cat knows all those commands better than a lot of dogs. But yes, I think all dogs ought to be taught basic commands. It could save a dog or cat's life!
