Is it normal to think my current best friend is stupid?

I just feel this way.

I rarely think other people are stupid, to be honest, but I truly think my current best friend is stupid. I often feel like I want to throw her out of the window since it's getting way too annoying.

We are currently best friends, but we have known each other for less than a year. I transferred to a new school and had to find new friends.

I'm not trying to say that I am clever. I never felt this way for anyone else, and I am obviously not a genius. But I truly feel like she is stupid.

Just is this normal?

So what are you telling us? Are you just using her to fill a void in your life?

    • Sort of...

When I came to this school, I was one of the only 4 new students, and since I don't have any classes with one of them, there were only 2 that I can actually talk to. One of them is pretty mean so I don't want to become her friend.

One choice for best friend left, so I just chose her.

The old students were nice too and I had plenty of other friends, but the thing is, they all already have their own best friends. I can become their friend but I can't become the BFF. And obviously I have to choose someone. She was my only choice, and in fact she had always been nice & kind.

Normally we're just alright. I just sometimes get this random feelings about her being stupid.

Although we spent a lot of time together, I still sometimes feel closer to other people.. we're close, yeah, but we don't have a lot of topics to talk about.

She likes gossiping about classmates & stars, which I never enjoyed. (I don't care about the stars for some reason) She watches TV shows that I never watch. She reads plenty of comic books but I'm not exactly interested. She loves romance stories but I don't like them.

So we just talk about school.

Perhaps the reason why I think she is stupid is because we have completely different hobbies and interests. Perhaps it's just because she's different, since, obviously, people naturally repel people who are different from them, and they may mistake being different as being stupid.

I know this might be the reason, but I still get annoyed and feel this way.

      XD...

So then you really are just using her to fill the void in your life. You talk about having a best friend like it's absolutely necessary to have one, and like it's as easy to get a best friend as it is to go to the store, and buy something you need.

I probably wouldn't have anything in common with that chick eithe, but honestly I kinda feel sorry for her.

        • Guess so....XD....

And honestly, I do think that a best friend is necessary. eg, during camping trip, 2 people live in 1 tent and there has to be someone that you can always group with...I can form groups of 3 with my other friends, but that would be a bit awkward. another eg. you always get someone to be together with.

I don't have many lessons with her because my school divides us into different sets in basically everything except art & music & PE. But I can be with other people during these classes considering that many friends are separated because of the sets, and when necessary I can always form groups of 3 with other friends of mine.

For the part about feeling sorry...idk how to respond. I've been quite...contradicting. Obviously I know that it's not right to think of her as stupid or whatever, especially when not she's very nice, but I still feel this way.

I would rather not have a so called best friend than have one who thinks I'm stupid. Not that celebrity gossip doesn't bore me to tears, because it does. Regardless, I still feel sorry for your friend.

Some people are just stupid, if she's nice to you then that's what counts.

what's wrong with having a stupid friend? suppose you had an IQ over 160 , you would either have stupid friends or none at all. you would know they are stupid and i wouldn't bother you in the least.

    • Hmm. I had been thinking about this for a while.

Now I guess, it's probably not only the problem of stupid or whatever.

Yes, she does annoy me when I try to explain a math question to her for 3 times and she still cannot understand. Yes, she does annoy me when I have to hours to teach her chemistry.

(I explained the same question to other people and they all got it by the first or second time. It's a really easy question.)

But there are other reasons. With being different.

People often mistake being different as being stupid, and perhaps I made the same mistake. I don't know.

We're interested in completely different things. She likes gossiping, TV shows, stars and comic books. I like none of those.

We also have different opinions on things. And she also believes in some ridiculous rumors that can easily be proven wrong.

Perhaps that's what made me think she is stupid. Perhaps she also thinks that I am stupid and it's just that I don't know about it, considering that I never told her about this feeling I get about her.

    • Well, to be honest, in many cases a stupid friend for an intelligent person doesn't sound like a good match or a genuine friendship. It also depends on what sort of intelligence we're referring to, as well as the connotation of stupidity in this context.

However, it's not that they're stupid because they didn't read the same number of books I did, or that they can't study science at my level, it's mostly that they're annoyingly stupid to the point of toxicity, which is damaging for and irreconcilable with the notion or friendship.

what part of no friends did i not make clear? can you please stay focused? if you are a super smart every else is a fucking retard , why is it wrong that they can't be your friend again? because you are smart and evil as well?

        • I never said that I am super smart. I never said that everyone else is a retard. Most people are alright for me and I can get along with them well. it's just her, probably because I know her more and spent more time with her.

And when did I say that they can't be my friend? I never said that. All I did is explaining some reasons why I might think she is stupid.

Once again, at the end, I never said that I am smart and I don't understand how something that I never said makes me evil.

Maybe she is not as bright as you or not as quick on the uptake but be patient. If you find it annoying then find someone on your level. She probably looks up to so don't just abandon her completely.

He who knows not and knows not that he knows not is a fool; avoid him. He who knows not and knows that he knows not is a student; teach him. He who knows and knows not that he knows is asleep; wake him. He who knows and knows that he knows is a wise man; follow him.

    • XD, I am not a very patient person. That's likely one reason why I feel this way. I'm trying to be more patient towards her though.

And BTW -- I love that last paragraph you sent!!

So what if she is stupid. She is a person. Does she show you respect?? Do you have feelings for her?? Is she nice to you??

Some people have very logical minds and can sort through complex problems with apparent ease while for others they have trouble connecting the dots. I am very interested in science and astronomy with regards to the universe. My wife has absolutely no interest. I'll be watching a documentary and ask her to watch and she says I already went to school I don't need to learn anymore. I have the philosophy that you are always learning. To do otherwise is boring and watching new and wonderful stuff just pass you by.

Some people think that having the ability to store lots of information makes you intelligent. It doesn't. It's the ability to use that information to sort through and understand interesting stuff and once done you have found that you have gone up one more rung in the ladder of knowledge and understanding.

But I'm getting carried away here. Do you love her and can you accept her as she is? Does she love you? Can you find a middle ground? If not then start easing yourself out of the relationship.

Sometimes people with aspergers come off as stupid. Mabey she has asperger syndrome. I have it and sometimes I can be slow at times.

    • Probably. But she doesn't seem to have a lot of social problems.

Anyways, I guess I was probably a bit way too extreme when I asked this question because of something that just happened. Normally we're alright. It's just that sometimes things get annoying... XD
