Is it normal to think my major is worthless?

I'm majoring in journalism and in literally every class I've taken we will watch a video about how the field is struggling, and how much harder it is to attain a with a good newspaper. I just wanted to take photos, not be a drone that shits out stories.

What else can I do with a degree in journalism? I like to be a little creative in my writing and really try to put my personality in it. I think that typical reporting is either too stupid: "KIM KARDASHIAN TOOK A PHOTO IN HER BED WITH A BRA ON OMG!!!1111" or too too intelligent for an average guy such as myself.

What should I do?

Journalism is a tough degree to major in. When you graduate its hard to find a job. The thing is, newspapers/magazines do those sensationalistic titles like :KIM KARDASHIAN TOOK A PHOTO IN HER BED WITH A BRA ON OMG!!! just to attract attention. These days people's attention is divided. Theres so much information out there we don't have enough time to read it all. We tend to gravitate to outrageous titles like ^ so thats why media does that. Anyways, its totally normal to feel that your major is worthless. These days, most degrees are.

Although newspapers are dying, there are lots of areas you can go into with a journalism degree. You can do broadcast journalism, radio journalism, online journalism, or do work with media, public relations, or communication departments. Working for radio, television, and freelance writing for online newspapers and magazines are all great opportunities for people with a journalism degree. Since you want to take photos, you might want to focus on photography in media as well. Good luck, and don't give up :)

You just wanted to take photos? Why not become a photographer? That's what I'm aiming at. Journalism isn't what it used to be. A long time ago, the press was reputable and had dignity. Now most of modern media has lost those qualities to the drain. A fine example are gossip sites/magazines. Talking negativities and spewing lies like vomit. I wonder how many celebrities get hurt by what the media says about them, true or not. It just feeds egos. Major papers like the Guardian or New York Times are papers to try to work for. Your course sounds more stifling than helpful. It's like they're trying to change your mind and study something else. Take a writing course. Getting a blog should also be good form of practice. Write about things that concern you and be true to yourself.

    Good Luck:)
