Fundamentalism and dogma ruin anything spiritual.
Myself, not being a Marxist, I can't subscribe to the concept of religion being the "opiate of the masses." However, I'm not a fan of fundamentalism.
This is something that applys to everything in this world. Extreme anything is a bad thing. Extreme hate of race means nazi, extreme religion equals war, extreme right wing or left wing leaves half the people without the support they need. So extreme anything is awful. We need things to be moderated. We need a black and a white but we need them to come together. When they come together they are balanced.
I think religion was supposed to be a self help tool that somehow turned into a tool to kill and judge others.
The bible, for example, explains ways on how to better yourself. Not what to search for when looking down on others. Unfortunately, people use it to judge others, or justify killing, or prevent others from marrying those they love.
Religion is the opiate of the masses. Run, run, run away fast or you certainly will become mired in something that will certainly ruin your life.
