Is it normal to totally f*ck up a phone job interview?

She asked me "tell me about yourself" and I totally screwed it up. I sounded like a rambling idiot. I almost wanted to hang up. I felt so intimidated and stupid. IIN?

If you don't know the number, don't answer it, then call back when YOU are ready to answer a lot of questions about yourself. Aceing an out of the blue telephone interview is extremely difficult, you must prepare and review just like you were going to a face to face.

Try to learn from it, and remember to be PREPARED. Telephone interviews are real interviews, and you are being judged, just like a face to face. I recommend buying a book on interview skills, they help you with your technique and teach you how to answer certain questions.

    Tips for telephone interview:

    1) Slow your speech down a little and pause occasionally, it gives you time to think and helps prevent you from rambling.

    2) If you're unsure, ask them to repeat the question, this does not go against you.

    3) Research the company you have applied to and learn about one or two things they are known for, plus any 'slogan' they use.

    4) Keep a note of questions you are asked in every interview you do and rehearse responses. Your list will end up a long one, but so worth it.

    5) Whenever an interviewer asks you tell them about yourself, make sure you relate personal skills and interests to what may have some relevance in the job.

    6) Sometimes they ask you what you do to relax, do not say play PC games or X-box or 'socialising'! Ideally say something active or creative (cooking, gym, pets, family, reading).

Remember an interview is another style of exam, you should treat it as such. And if you've got as far as an interview....well done! You obviously have something they are interested in.

Thanks! I'm going to turn down the job. I made a really bad impression from the jump and I'll just do better next time

  • Hahahaha this happened to me two weeks ago! I didn't expect for her to call so soon and was totally unprepared to answer any questions. In the end I got an interview, but not without difficulty xD

Think about selling yourself and also being honest. Think from their point of view. Tgey want a trustworthy reliable candidate.

Well it is a pretty vague question to be asked. I'd feel like it's sort of an unfair situation but you should now be more prepared for the next time this happens by writing your responses down. If you learned something from this font beat yourself up over it!! I remember going to an interview and I felt like a complete joke because I was so damn nervous and clueless! No one likes interviews. But think about your best qualities and how you might be good for their business. You can look up tips for this, they really help and so does practice. I wouldn't be surprised if SHE has also been in such a pickle because most people experience this at some point I promise! DO NOT BE EMBARASSED!!

  • It happens to everyone. Just be more concise next time and you'll do great.

I've done it before. So it's prolly common. But phone interviews suck it like being lazy

Its okay. Everybody feels like they've messed up sometimes. Especially with interviews. Don't beat yourself up too much over it. Interviews can be intimidating. Thats why it gets nerve racking preparing for them.

Sometimes we think we did a terrible job when really we might have done it better than most of the other people who have done it before us, or after us. Think positive about it. Don't worry. Everythings gonna be alright.

  • Yeah don't worry, people sometimes see it as you being a genuine person and not being rehearsed and fake if you know what I mean...

That happens to me too though and my face starts to burn..

    Btw... good luck!
