Is it normal to upgrade things on friend's computers while using them?

Just now I was using my mother's laptop for a few minutes to check my email while visiting the 'rents. When I was done checking my email I realized that her Firefox version was out of date, so I took a few minutes and upgraded it for her.

I also frequently see long overdue "system update ready to install" messages on people's computers and I just have to click on them and install the stuff because I know that the clueless owner of that machine will never do it themselves.

Is it just me, or is this normal geek behavior?

you should probably tell the person that their programs and stuff need to be updated and ask them if it's okay if you can update it for them, because sometimes people would rather stay with the old program then get a new one.

It's because we crave a perfect world, so you feel the need to improve the world a tiny bit, and do so by proceeding to upgrade the computer. I wouldn't do it to every computer that needed updated, unless i knew the owner truely was clueless about computers.
